A drink from the sound bar, anyone?
« on: 14 Nov 2011, 07:40 pm »
Any audiocircle folks happily using a sound bar/sub setup?  Any reasonably priced sound bars that won't make an audiophile cringe.. or run away from the movie?

I have an LCD TV in a room that won't easily accommodate a full HT setup.  Just looking for a full and reasonably balanced sound, with natural and intelligible speech and vocals.  Not looking to shake the floor.  Not looking to emulate surround sound.  Just want something more dynamic than the internal TV speakers.

It may come down to how you define reasonably...

I have not run screaming from the room in friend's places that use a Yamaha soundbar and a sub.

Super WAF, and reasonable sound in my books.

I brought home a Sony CT 150 yesterday to try.  Painless setup.  Ridiculously small footprint.  Very high WAF.  This basic model is cheap as chips.  Watched a chick flick with my wife last night.  The sound bar definitely enhanced the audio experience, relative to internal TV speakers.

Not sure if I'm going to keep yet...

Good question.
My wife's been wanting "something" to add some volume to her 50" Samsung plasma. The house can get loud sometimes and the factory speakers don't have enough 'umph'.

What display do you have?

The yamha's always get ranked as top of class however they are not cheap and cheerful.  The ysp 4100 is 1800 or so.  You can sometimes pick them up for a good deal perhaps black friday.  I have a panny 42" plasma in our family room and I had tried one of the cheap vizio sound bars (at costco) with the sub out and both coax digital and rca inputs as well.  It was a dramatic improvement over the stock tv speakers and made it much more enjoyable.
