A tale of three amplifiers
« on: 10 Nov 2011, 01:15 pm »
Several weeks ago, when I read about the new FET-Valve upgrade in this circle, I made a decision.  I would get another credit card, and upgrade my 550 EXR.  Once I received the credit card, I also purchased an Ultra 350 to tide me over while my amplifier was in at Frank's.

The Ultra was certainly cleaner than the EXR.  Transient attack and overall definition was superior as well as imaging information.  Yes things were better, and I enjoyed going through my music collection hearing parts of the mix that were subtly buried under the grundge that were a part of the EXR's performance.

Yesterday, my upgraded EXR returned from Frank's.   I left work early so that I could retrive the amplfier from my back porch.  Downstairs it went and quickly it was hooked up, replacing the Ultra that I had been using.  I put on a Genesis SACD that was fresh in my mind as I had seen the concert only a few days before.  And I was stunned.  A complete layer of "haze" that was there with the Ultra no longer was there.  The music exhibited a "stark transparency" that was hard to believe.  After living with FET-Valve amps for 15 years this presentation was not just better it was completely better.  The distortion factor is so low that elements in the mix, the pans, the movements of the faders became immediately apparent.  Simply miked material such as Janis Ian had a voice that floated in its own space, with wonderful coherence and articulation.  Material with bass such as Steely Dan "Two Against Nature" was a revelation, as the mix's for the bass, drum and various synths was completely revealed.  Extension at both ends of the spectrum was well enhanced, more air, more low bass, and more spacial information for the material.

I went upstairs and called Frank.  In the 30 plus years of sending him equipment I have never heard such an upgrade.  Whatever I sent him was ALWAYS better and well worth the money, but this upgrade was in another league.  I told him he hit a home run with this design and he hit it out of the park.  The best money I ever spent in audio.

So what did you upgrade your Fet-Valve to? With so many upgrades coming out, especially the "+" type upgrade, I simply lost track.

There is only one current AVA upgrade to any of our past big hybrid power amplifiers, the Fet Valve 400R upgrade for any previous 300 or 350 series amp in an AVA chassis, and the Fet Valve 600R upgrade for any previous 500 or 550 series amp in an AVA chassis.

The upgrades consist of two new audio boards, two new ground plane - output regulator boards, one new multi-circuit regulator board, and all new Exicon double die power mos-fet devices as required.

At this time the upgrade price for any older AVA hybrid amplifier is $1999.  It is a huge project here, requiring the design and tooling of the new boards and about 25 hours of skilled assembly and testing time.

To date the response from all new owners of these amplifiers has been overwhelmingly favorable.  We doubt if there are any other big power amplifiers on the market at any price that will provide you with as  rewarding a musical experience.

New Fet Valve 400R amplifiers are still available at $2549 and 600R at $2999 with our standard black faceplates until the new silver faceplates are available.  Then the prices must go to $2999 and $3499 respectively.

There is much more to the new faceplates then just the much higher cost of the finished metal.  They also required a triac controlled electronic turn on and turn off circuit to support the new pushbutton power switch included and even a new LED power indicator circuit and our cost to design and implement these.

In any event, we can confidently expect that a new Fet Valve amplifier will be your best investment ever in your quest for the perfection of your musical listening experience.

Best regards,

Frank Van Alstine

Let the confusion begin!!! I hope no one writes about their upgrade from their old Fet-Valve to the new Fet-Valve!

(Frank came out with the Fet-Valve series in the late 80's and decided to name (rename?) his latest series Fet-Valve.)

You are correct, charmerci,

Feeling somewhat generous today, and with fond feelings for those old original Fet Valve amplifiers of 15 years ago or more, I am making this offer to original owners of original Fet Valve amplifiers built in our own AVA chassis; a 20 percent discount on the price to convert an original Fet Valve amplifier to a new Fet Valve amplifier specifications.

I am really curious as to how many of these old amps are still in daily use out there, more than I expect, I will soon find out.  This offer is good until Christmas.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine
