We listened to that fight in 1971 on car radio headed back from a night of skiing, I couldn't believe it when the announcer called the knockout of Ali.  When watching the replay later you could see how Frazier dominated Ali throughout the fight.  He fought like a man possessed after being mistreated (he thought) by the man he had helped up out of poverty a few months before.  Of course Ali was just promoting the fight, but Joe, simple and direct, couldn't understand it.  Joe Frazier was a man defined by his opponents, and who defined them.

Without Smokin' Joe Frazier, Ali would not have been "the Greatest" of the heavyweights.

And I still remember his fight with George Foreman. Foreman hit him so hard that Frazier, still on his feet, was just walking away, he didn't know where he was.

And this was a guy that could take a tremendous beating and never go down. You could tell there were times when Ali hit him with everything he had and Joe just kept coming.

He actually had a rematch against Foreman, gutsy considering the whupping he took the first time. Joe did not lack guts or heart, and had better boxing skills than often given credit for. For all he contributed to the sport, Ali has a lot to answer for in regards to his treatment of Frazier. Frazier, IMO, could have beaten most of the heavyweights of the last 20 years, possibly including Tyson.

Blessings to you, Smokin' Joe.

If he couldn't beat Foreman, Tyson would have been a tougher match. I think that if MIke Tyson had Ali's brains he would have retired undefeated instead of washed up with a tramp stamp on his face.

It doesn't matter, Joe Frazier is a great legend and truly one of the best fighters of all time.

While we will never know, as in all "time machine" fights, I would have liked Joe's chances. Joe fought during one of the strongest heavyweight eras; Tyson during one of the weakest. Tyson was a frontrunner who relied heavily on intimidation; many of his opponents were scared shitless before the fight even started (Bruce Seldon even went down from a "punch" that video showed didn't even land.) On the occasions when his opponents didn't fall apart, Tyson did. I'm mainly thinking Douglas and Holyfield. When a few wild haymakers in the early rounds failed to close the show, Tyson had no Plan B.

I don't know if Tyson could have hung with a guy who could fight him on more or less even terms on the inside. Remember, Foreman had a big size advantage, both height and reach, over Frazier that Tyson would not have had. My guess, based on watching both their careers and taking into  account the caliber of their opposition, is that if anybody would crumble in that scenario, it wouldn't be Frazier. Put another way, it would have come down to whether Tyson was too much fighter for Frazier, or Frazier was too much man for Tyson. My money would be on the latter.

Anyway, blessings to the great Smokin' Joe.

I was growing up when Floyd Patterson was the champ. And then he got beat by Igemar Johannson but came back and beat him in a rematch. And then this young loudmouth, brash upstart, Ali (Cassius Clay), emerged and changed everything. Such style and speed and talk. I thought Liston was gonna kill him.

Smokin Joe was a perfect foil for Ali. Except Frazier just wouldn't quit.

Those were interesting days in boxing, especially the heavyweights.

I guess I'm too old because now I can't stand to see 2 people do that to each other any more.  :banghead:
