Building my Selah Audio ScanSpeak References (SSR)
Work In Progress and completed pics.
SSR Measured Freq Resp - Optimised for off-axis.
SSR Midwoofer - ScanSpeak 8531G Revelator 6.5" - bass performance of the legendary SS 8545 but with a more refined midrange. Well behaved response to 5khz. Suitable for sealed or ported designs.
SSR Tweeter - Fountek CD3 ribbon - open, airy, detailed, smooth, extended, refined sound with no brightness, harshness or edginess. Excellent horizontal dispersion for a ribbon.
SSR Sealed box - WIP - 1" MDF panels, 1.25" MDF baffle, full shelf brace at half-depth, strut brace from shelf brace to back panel, 1" oak dowel braces from baffle to back panel. Both drivers flush mounted. External edges, midwoofer cutout internal edge, and shelf brace cutouts are all rounded over. Empty box is approx 45lbs. Boxes are to be primed inside then wet sanded smooth, prior to application of final coat.
SSR Sealed Boxes - WIP - Crossover is mounted on a trapdoor that fits into the bottom of the speaker in a separate sealed cavity. Binding posts are fitted to small trapdoors that fit into the back of the crossover cavity.
SSR WIP1 - SSR boxes with all cutouts sealed with masking tape in preparation for wet sanding then final coat. The 2 flat pieces in front are 1" thick MDF plinths that will screw under the bottom plates of the metal stands for greater stability and optimal speaker height.
SSR WIP2 - From left: the two XO trapdoors that fit into the bottom of the speakers, two 1" thick MDF plinths to screw onto the top plates of the stands (to provide wider support and optimal speaker height), the two small binding post trapdoors that fit into the back of the boxes.
SSR Rear - SSR's sitting on metal stands with sand filled legs.
Binding Posts - Eichmann CablePods - gold coated copper posts with minimum of metal in the signal path. Posts are mounted onto mini trapdoors that provide access to the separate crossover cavity in the bottom of the box.
Completed SSR - SSR setup on sand filled stands. Fitted 1" MDF top and bottom plates to the welded metal plates, to provide a wider & more stable footprint and bring the speaker to optimum height for listening seat.
Speaker stand plinth. - Cut some brass threaded rod into 2.5" lengths, glued one end into knobs (come with brass thread inserts), ground other end into a point and fed through plinth into T-Nut fitted into bottom of plinth. These custom spikes enable the speakers to be levelled from above, with one hand. Three spikes per stand ensure no rocking.
Finished & setup. - Setup and sounding great! Approx 4'6" out from wall, 5'3" from side walls, 8'6" apart, 12'6" from listening position, toed-in half way between straight-ahead and listener. Room is 19' x 24' x 9'.
