Cherry versus Spectron
« on: 21 Nov 2010, 06:21 pm »
Some of our customers have traded their Spectron amps for the Cherry or DAC4800A.  Here's one example found on our reviews page (http://www.digitalamp.com/review.htm):

"After some listening with Spectron amp and DAC 4800A amp, I decided to keep DAC amp. I didn't realize how good this amp is until I have both amps to compare. They're both have a lot power, the mid sound about the same, the separation of the instruments give that to DAC, the high is about right with DAC but Spectron seem a little bright for me. The bass on the DAC is fast and tight."

Note that the Cherry amp is a big step up from the DAC4800A.  The Cherry PLUS is the ultimate.  We also now have the new Cherry MONO (not announced officially yet).  The Cherry MONO provides more than 700W into 4 ohms with close to 120dB SNR.  The price for new units is less than $2100.  We have demos for less.

I did a search on Audio Circle for Spectron and Cherry in the same post, and found these...

"one of those DAC amps would be my choice of all of them" (over Spectron, Nuforce, and Hypex):
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=85729.msg836091#msg836091

"when we put a Spectron amp in the transients were far more rounded than w/ the Cherry":
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=80470.msg795070#msg795070

"Digital Audio Company amps not only held its' own against the Spectron amp it also competes":
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=80470.msg793177#msg793177

The bottom line is that we believe in our technology, and we take a straightforward approach.  Our design allows super low distortion and noise (excellent specs) with amazing sonics.

We are not a "mass market" amp company --- more like a specialty/custom shop.  We hand build, test, and listen to every unit for each of our customers.  We have never sold our amps through dealers.

Here are some recent Cherry amp reviews...

If you have listened to both Spectron and Cherry, please add to this thread.  Thanks.

Since your amps do not have a on/off switch in the front panel, do you
recommend leaving them on all the time. If not, can you add a switch in the front panel. I don't like the idea of my wife or teenagers having to blindly turn
the amp on and off at the back of the amp.

Thanks,
RL

Since the idle power from the wall is less than 30W, we do recommend leaving the amp all the time.  Otherwise, you can use a power strip or the remote standby control.  With a simple open/close switch (not the momentary type), you can short the remote contacts to force the amp into standby.  In standby, the amp consumes less than 5W from the wall, and you can place the switch pretty much anywhere you want.  That's for the Cherry.  The DAC4800A has a momentary switch on the front panel to toggle standby/operation.  You can also drive the remote standby control with a preamp that has a 5V to 12V "on" signal to automatically turn the amp on when the preamp is active.  Thanks for your post.

I have Spectron Musician III Mk2 in mono and those are pretty special. I think the Spectron mono config makes a bigger difference than usually seen going from stereo to mono.  Do you have any comparisons in mono configuration?

Our MONO version is very new (not even officially announced yet), so it's unlikely that anyone has compared Cherry MONOs to Spectron monos...  Good point, though.  Thanks for your post.

The bottom line is that we believe our technology is more refined, and we don't use any "black magic" like bybee filters.
Seeing that this was posted in your circle, and you welcome honest comparison between the competing manufacturer...perhaps your use of the phrase "black magic.." with regard to your competitor's product should be curtailed? I mean you do believe that your technology is superior to that other brand, then there is no need to 'cast stones' at whatever tweaks (esoteric or not) 'they' may include in their product. Kinda undermine your stated belief that your product kicks their butt. My inflection there.
Just sharing my impressions of your use of the language. Feel free to cast this off into the..intergalactic wastebin. (Just love the label on the AC rubbish bin )  :thumb:

I didn't see many direct comparisons between a Cherry amp and a Spectron. The one comparison I did see, didn't mention which model Spectron they were comparing it too, which would've been helpful.

Well, any time I see Spectron, it gets my attention. I've got one and reading through the DAC threads, I can't help but be impressed with their following here.

I would love to get the new Cherry monos and see how they measure up to the Spectron. I love the 600W the Spectron gives you. I've had to replace my windows several times now!!!  :thumb:

That's exactly why I started this thread.  I'm more interested in sonics than bench measurements.  Hopefully, we'll see more specifics (like model designations) in future posts...  Thanks for your post.
