CES / THE SHOW dead this year?
« on: 9 Jan 2007, 02:38 am »
I just heard from a few reps that The Show is pretty much dead this year? Or at least it was today.

I heard in the past that many of the reviewers were not going to bother with this show as much any more and concentrate mor eon shows like RMAF. Think this is a new trend?

I guess they are also having a problem with the voltage with spikes well over 130V at the wall.

Anyone else have any feedback today on how things are going?

I would imagine this would be more for THE Show than CES as The SHow is where most of the Audio is.

I have been checking the Gizmodo site...not an audio site but they are reporting very little audio - its all video and portable digital players and phones

Today was rather rough.

GES (CES's OWN shipping company) managed to Smash one crate,
drill it full of fork lift holes and store one of them upside down (Pallet on
bottom delivered on the top) destroy a preamplifier, other ancillary equipment and cause
undue stress. Venetian rooms are difficult to control sound wise but not
too bad. Doors will not close without locking so if you leave it open,
other rooms blasting away disrupt auditions of "normal level" Perhaps
some duct tape over the latch dog can keep it out of the strike plate and
people can come and go and the door can stay closed.

"Juice" is running rather high.

A HUGE Thanks to Bruce Jacobs and Mr. Tucker for helping us out
with our new found preamplifier problem. ( the smashing syndrome)

After this shipping snafu...we need all the help we can get...but
we have big tone and decent...predictable sound.

A HUGE thank you to David Belles who on the telephone helped us
in a grand way to get our system up to original luster.

This, from the EnjoyTheMusic THE show report, could explain a bit of the deadness:
Began today at T.H.E. Show (The Home Entertainment Show, an independent dedicated high-end event at the St. Tropez that operates at the same time as  CEA's CES. The buzz is obviously about the new high-end audio venue for the CES (Venetian) and will the industry come across town to this show. As many of you recall, the previous CES venue was directly next to the St. Tropez. Another note of interest is the difference in pricing between the CES and T.H.E Show, with CES generally being two to three times (or more) the cost for the basic room. i could go on, but these are developing stories whose outcome/result is to be determined once both shows end.

So.. CES has a competing dedicated hi-end venue this year, and THE Show is no longer next door.

CES has always had a competing hi-end venue, had it before THE Show. Was always in a separate motel/hotel. In recent years, the Alexis Park (we were there last two years). However, since THE Show started, they always had it next door, convenient.

When we heard about the venue being changed to the Venetian and major increase in already high fees . . .  we opted to do RMAF instead, and I'm glad we did!

I thik this is a new trend where more will be concentrating on RMAF and similar shows. From what I hear, THE SHOW sold only half the number of press passes as compared to RMAF this year.
CES is still a big show for those looking into technology updates for iPods and stuff. Plus the new iPhone was released by Apple. CES --- THE SHOW........ two different worlds.

Not even iPods are at CES.  Apple released the iPhone and other accessories during MacWorld 07 in San Francisco.  Companies go to CES just be there with all the press, but it's too big and generic.  I like specialized conferences that focus on one main topic like CEDIA for Home Theater, RMAF for audio, PMA and Photokina for cameras, Computex for computer components

CES is huge, of course, the biggest show there is, I believe. T.H.E show was always a sort of step -child. With it no longer being next door to CES it might not do as well. I believe it has had more of a HT flavor than audio, as we think of it. ?

You know.....I'm kind of disappointed in all these reports from THE Show so far.

Reading them each night, and the only AC member mentioned so far is Dusty from Channel Islands....what about Dan (Modwright), or John (Bent), or Brian (VMPS), or Steve (EA)....let's get to those rooms...... :hyper:

Agreed...the coverage is shitty.
Its like the High End section has gone AWOL. One of the supposed coverage was 10 pics of the board listing at the Venetian...pathetic.

Don't be disappointed...hopefully the worse the CES show gets, the high-end audio vendors will instead focus on RMAF, so we shall have better RMAF for years to come..

Yeah....They keep flashing all the high buck stuff....60G's, 80G's, 100G's...no wonder others think audiophiles are crazy.....

I do see the IPod coming along, and drawing in newbee's with the different equipment to draw them in to Hi-Fi.......plug your IPod into this, and add it to your system.... 8)
