I own both of those Persefone albums. I like both but the vocals are slightly better on SM.

Loving the Insomnium recommendation, I've seen them twice in Joliet, IL. Once with Dark Tranquility and another time with Omnium Gatherum. OG has a great album called Beyond which I was totally addicted to. You may like them if you like Insomnium (the lead guitarist is in both bands).

Also, for those who like Persefone's Spiritual Migration, I thought that their prior effort Shin-Ken was way better.

Welcome Rob. I'm loving this thread too. If Insomnium gets close to Buffalo/Toronto it's on my "must go" list. I was able to go see this April Delain and Nightwish. Holy crap are they good. Been following these bands for a while. If you're into metal/alt/ambient give "The Gathering" a try. Anneke's vocal is incredible. Start with Mandylion and then Nighttime Birds albums. Their later work (for me anyway) meandered too far from metal.

I'm gonna drop one album on you that has undoubtedly been my favorite over the last year: Exhausted Prayer - Ruined. Absolutely incredible.

Zero - thank you for the compliment. If the "Doom" genre is to your liking... Draconian should be on the very top of your list. For the past 4 years they have parked on my top band of all time. Just ahead of Opeth. Sadly, though, Lisa Johansson has left the band but I'm slowly getting over it.

I came upon another band that I am really loving. Guess I am just a sucker for good melodic death and progressive. The vocals are a bit darker than typical death growls, more gutteral, less harsh. Also from Australia like the brilliant Ne Obliviscaris.

Also.. Draconian is coming out with a new release the end of this month with their new lead singer, Heike Langhans.

Best Doom Metal band on the planet (IMO)...

Disarmonia Mundi is pretty good. A little more modern sounding, as in the vocals sound a tiny bit more like american alt metal, but still good.

So I just stumbled upon the website http://www.progmetalzone.com/ . I think I'd seen an article from there before. Its a great resource for albums coming out that fit the greater prog metal description. They have two top 50 lists for the years 2013 and 2014 that are loaded with great albums and tons of new stuff to explore.
