NEW! THE AVA FULL DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEMS
« on: 30 Apr 2008, 05:59 pm »
What do we mean by a full differential system?

This is a system in which there are both + and - left and + and - right signals maintained separately from the source to the speakers.  Assuming that all the + and - electronics are carefully matched, all of the distortion components from anything earlier in the audio chain arrive at the speakers exactly of equal amplitude but out of phase and completely cancel!  The result is essentially a distortion free system, not matter what the source of the distortion was, no matter whether you can measure it, understand it, or have even tried to design it out.  Voila! Its all gone.

Its kind of an extreme version of a balanced line system, except that almost all balanced line systems are actually single ended internally, so the advantages of full differential operation are negated.

It requires a full differential DAC, coming from the actual DAC chip output with four independent channels, + and - left, and + and - right.  We have it, our new Ultra Differential DAC.  It simply takes normal coax digital in and has four audio outputs, + and - left, and again, + and - right.  The DAC contains the newest Wolfson digital chips, and four identical Ultra hybrid analog filter/output circuits.

Then it requires a full differential preamplifier.  This needs + and - left and + and - right channel inputs from the differential DAC, and additional normal stereo inputs from other sources.  For more mundane stereo analog sources, the Ultra differential preamp also provides internal inverter circuits to convert these to differential operation, so the advantages of distortion cancellation can occur from thereon downstream.  The preamp at this point requires two matched two channel volume controls, one for left channel and one for right channel.  We have this all done, tested, packaged, and working perfectly too, the Ultra Differential Preamp.  It contains four identical Ultra hybrid line circuits and their necessary power supplies plus the inverter circuits for stereo sources. The preamp has differential outputs, + and - left and + and - right channels to feed two matching power amplifiers in the differential mode.

Finally the system requires two matched stereo power amplifiers.  The connections are the same as in bridge mode operation, with the speakers coming from the left and right hot connections.  The + and - signals are finally summed at the speakers.  Of course one further advantage is that with a pair of Ultra 550 amplifiers, you have over a kilowatt of power available per channel.

In addition, we are presenting the ΩmegaStar Differential Preamplifier/DAC.  Because the solid state circuit take so much less real estate, we were able to install the Wolfson digital circuits, four ΩmegaStar DAC analog filter circuits, four ΩmegaStar line circuits and the additional inverter circuits all in one Ultra SL size package.  Simply add two identical amplifiers and be astonished.  Or just add a single ΩmegaStar differential amplifier..  This packages four 120 watt per channel ΩmegaStar solid state amp circuits in one of our amp chassis.  It has left + and - and right + and - inputs, and differential outputs for a pair of speakers.  Three hundred plus watts per channel and a completely done deal.

Oh yes, how does the stuff sound?  After you experience it, you can't go back..

Frank,

Have you posted pricing already?

If not, when will it be posted?

Funny.

Usually with balanced line additional circuits (or transformers) are needed to change back and forth from single ended to balanced somewhere in the system, circuits that cannot do anything good, and cost extra and are unnecessary for home audio.  Balanced line for home audio is simply another audiophlake adage that is wrong, as are all the rest of them (green felt marker edged CDs, ming shu dots, audiophile ac outlet covers, and so on and on and on until I want to puke).

Wow!  Does the OmegaStar Differential Pre-amp/DAC have phono inputs and line outputs for a self-powered subwoofer?

Do either have (buffered) tape loops? Remote?

Not really...that isn't what he did here.

I think Frank's whole point is that switching to and from balanced designs within a single component is pointless.  His new differential (balanced line system) product is from source to speaker.  Thus, we're talking about two entirely different design concepts here...

Not sure what's going on but it seems to me a person would have to buy a complete new audio system if he were to go this route. Right? Wrong?

Balanced drive (or differential drive, however you want to put it) has become quite popular in the headphone community in the past few years, and certain headphones really really benefit from it...it'll be interesting to see how this translates to speakers.  I look forward to show impressions/reviews.

All you need is the new Differential preamplifier and add another matching amplifier to your existing one. All other source components are compatible.

The left amplifier will power the left speaker, the right amplifier will power the right speaker.

Your diagram leaves out the key element is thus differential system - the differential DA converter.  The differential signal comes out of the chips themselves and the rest of the amplification system maintains it to the speakers.  While the preamp converts non-differential sources such an a tuner or phono, the main benefit comes form the new differential D/A converting chips.

The D/A converter is built into the preamp.

If you go with the solid state.

The D/A converter is built into the preamp.

In that case you should label the preamp as Preamp/DAC and the CD "Player" should be CD "Transport".

From what I see in your diagram mono amps won't work. That leaves me out. I've got a pair of CIA D-200 mono amps.

In that case, you'd just use another pair of D200s for the other channel, so you have a total of four mono channels: L+, L-, R+, R-.

I believe you need to have four channels of amplification.
