Yamaha HTR question

I'm using a Yamaha HTR-5635. I have a powered sub hooked up via the subwoofer output pre-out on the back of the receiver. The subwoofer will only play when I have the ID Bass setting set to "both". It won't play when I have it set to "subwfr".  Any possible explanations greatly appreciated.

nevermind. i had to switch the main speaker setting to "small".
