Recommend a Country Song

Not really into Country but there are a few songs that I like, Suds in the Bucket by Sarah Evans, Something in Red and Except for Monday by Lorrie Morgan, Every Little Thing by Carlene Carter, Fast As You by Dwight Yoakam and of coarse Shania Twain.

My mom played Country Classics when I was a toddler so I'm familiar with many Oldies but not into listening too. Merle Haggard was popular for awhile and Johnny Cash San Quentin on the car 8 track player.

Anyway looking for suggestions to add to Amazon HD playlist, so have at it. :smoke:

The perfect country and western song should say something about Momma, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin' drunk.  8)

Rather than a song, I'll give you a few artists that are my favs,

Jamie Johnson, start with the album - That Lonesome Song
Toby Keith - 35 Biggest Hits
Alan Jackson - 34 Number Ones
Trace Adkins - Definitive Greatest Hits
Vince Gill - Love Songs
Big & Rich - Horse of a Different Color
Chris Stapleton - Traveler

on the poppier side of country

Rascal Flats - it's all good but start with Melt
Keith Urban - it's all good too

Tons of great country music to pick from as long as you drop your preconceived notions.

Kasey Chambers - "These Pines"
Patty Loveless - "Blame It on Your Heart"
Suzy Bogguss (an old friend of mine) - "Someday Soon"
Charlie Worsham - "Young to See"
Mary-Chapin Carpenter - just about anything, but try "Down at the Twist and Shout," "Passionate Kisses," "Late for Your Life," "Halley Came to Jackson"
Mary Gauthier - "Mercy Now"
Kim Richey - "Straight As the Crow Flies"

There's no end to the possibilities.

I listen to a lot of country music and for me Johnny Cash is king.  Just last night I was listening to this on Qobuz https://www.johnnycash.com/music/at-the-carousel-ballroom-april-24-1968/ and my teen age daughters came into the room and told me ‘this music reminds us of our childhood’.  In my book that’s a pretty good memory to have.

My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend and I Miss Him.

If Ida Shot Her When I Wanted to I'd be Out by Now

If the Phone Don't Ring You'll Know it's Me
(this is actually a Fabulous Thunderbirds song)

If you play any country song backwards your wife comes back, your dog comes back, you get your truck back, you get your house back, you get your job back....

The best country is from Texas, Austin and Houston specifically..
Albums to check out
Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth
Nancy Griffith - Flyer
Mary Chapin Carpenter -  Stones in the Road
Kacy Musgraves - Pagent Material

Not a huge country fan either, but I do enjoy Chris Stapleton's music.  A heavy dose of blues in his music.

Also, check out Van Morrison's take on US country music on his "Pay the Devil" LP.

I am not a huge fan of the genre, although I really like these releases:
Son Volt - "Trace" and "Honky Tonk"
Sturgill Simpson - "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music"
The Black Lillies - "Whiskey Angel" and "Hard To Please"

And of course, Johnny Cash, "Live At Folsom Prison"

And for an amazingly deep and clear voice, Dick Curless - "Travelling Through"

My country music taste is kind of all over the place, from the 1960s to present.  My tastes probably lean towards the pop side of country.

Joe Stampley - All These Things (I knew this song from the 1970s but it took me FOREVER (literally years) to find out the title and who sang it)
LeAnn Rimes - Leavin' On Your Mind
Dicky Lee - 9,999,999 Tears
Trace Adkins - Every Light In The House
Keith Urban - Blue Ain't Your Color
Sara Evans - A Real Fine Place To Start

Thanks for all the suggestions, I checked them all out except for the full albums. Sorry most do not meet my high standards. For example I wanted to like 'City of New Orleans' by Willie Nelson but IMO he doesn't have the voice to make the song great. Checked out a few other artists and same. Sure I heard the song by someone else who has the voice for this song.

Down at the Twist & Shout by Mary Chapin Carpenter is borderline but I added it to my playlist anyway. Passionate Kisses IMO was done better by Lucinda Williams.

What am I looking for? The voice, the song, song construction, performance. Suds in the Bucket by Sara Evans album version is an example of my high standard. She has the voice, she sings it with just the right or perfect country twang and its a great song. :smoke:

"City of New Orleans" was written by Chicagoan Steve Goodman, and most famously recorded by Arlo Guthrie. Perhaps you should check out their versions. I draw the line at John Denver's, though, who changed some of the words and gave himself a co-writing credit.

Also, I'm sure this wasn't your intent, but to say that respondents' suggestions don't meet your "high standards" is tantamount to saying our standards are lower than yours. Perhaps you might consider phrasing that in a less condescending way, like, "these don't appeal to me," or "that's not quite what I'm looking for in a country song."

El, Oh, El!!

Every once in while I have to have a Patsy Cline fix but other than that....

However I would rather listen to Country all day than have to listen to rap for one minute.

Yes, now I recall posting in one of Mags other threads where he asked for music suggestions and dismissed all of them.

Obviously, Mag should be gracing the rest of us with his superior music recommendations, instead of the other way around.

I have maybe 35 years left to live. I ask a simple question, do I want to hear that song again? If the answer is 'no' I'm certainly not going to add it to my playlist. I suppose that's what makes me an audiophile as opposed to just being a music lover.

Anyway still looking for a volunteer to take over the Music Circle. Since nobody has come forward I thought I might try being more of an *hole. See if that generates more responses.

I can't stand both kinds of music: Country, and Western.

 :banana piano:

I do like a few songs from the 80s and 90s. Music aside: I personally can't stand Garth Brooks but love Trisha Yearwood.
