Okay, if every freakin' store on the planet is going to play Christmas music already, at least some of them should play this: Simply Three - God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Bob, "Nope".... I'm always "this close" to being in the mood for some good blues.
Certainly not a reflection of my mood.

Jerry, great find, I love that!

It's sad that this video has been up for 4.5 years and I'm the only "like" it's had.
What's up with that?  :?

Yeah, it's kind of f'd up when the Artist doesn't even 'like' his own video...  :)

Other than that, I *can't* 'like' it unless I log in to YT. They really need to fix that.

Cool tunes, though.  :thumb:

Well then, how about this flavor of blues? I hunted around and didn't find much in the way of Melvin Taylor videos, but here is an actual video of him and the Slack Band playing a George Benson classic live (yeah, I know this is more jazz, but I couldn't resist changing my link to this one when I saw it - had a proper blues tune linked at first), then just a better sounding cut from one of his albums with a series of images. I really don't understand why Melvin isn't more well known - been around for ages and he's great.

-------

While on the subject of fantastic guitarists...

I stumbled across Rachel Flowers while checking out some ELP on YouTube several years ago, and was stunned by her mastery of Keith Emerson's work. A couple of years ago, she started playing guitar, and here she is with Dweezil Zappa, absolutely nailing Frank's fretwork on Montana (she gets going at the two minute mark). Yep, she's blind - a result of being born three months premature. Handicaps can be gifts. The brain's plasticity means that her occipital lobe, roughly a third of the cortex, isn't just doing nothing since it isn't receiving visual input. She has an auditory/linguistic/musical super-brain. I really wish someone would image her brain while she is playing, or just imagining herself playing, an instrument.

...and now for something completely different - some Russian folk metal - ГРАЙ (Grai).

I like Melvin, but as far as "Blue Jean Blues" is concerned, I like the ZZ Top version from 1975 much, much better.
Melvin seems to rush the song, like he's in a hurry. The ZZ version is slower, more "painful" (in a good, dirty blues sorta way).

I can't argue with you there. If Melvin has one bad habit, it's rushing. I loved ZZ Top back in the mid-70s and that is among the very best renditions of 'Blue Jean Blues' on record. Speaking of the mid-70s, Bill Nelson was probably one of the lesser known guitar masters. This isn't blues, but it's one of my all-time favorite songs - from an album most people have probably never heard, the 1974 debut of Be Bop Deluxe, 'Ave Victim'. 'Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape' will always occupy a special place in my brain. Unfortunately, the only YouTube video of Bill playing it live is just an excerpt, but it is recent and the sound quality is high.

If you like it, give a listen to the entire track from the album.

If we wind the clock back one more year to 1973, Genesis released 'Selling England by the Pound' and thereon lies 'Firth of Fifth'. It may not be terribly flashy, but the guitar solo in that song has soul - another all-time favorite of mine. In fact, I find this solo by Steve Hackett incredibly moving.

By the way, I also adore that Fernandez guitar - sustain for days.
