Title: A Subtle Difference?
Post by: Mag on 23 Sep 2020, 06:40 am
As I listen to Led Zeppelin- Song Remains the Same at Concert SPL. I get the impression while playing Air guitar that the sound is projecting away from the Stage rather than coming toward me, seated in the front row. So I pretend I'm Jimmy playing to the crowd.

It's a subtle difference but am I really hearing this or is it just inside my head? Can you or another person tell if music is moving toward you or away from you?

Easy to tell if live recording as audience is back in the stage. Most recordings put you on stage or up front and personal.

I notice the same kind of effect in ELP- Show That Never End, re-mastered cd

I imagine that it's because the microphones are placed behind the speakers at the venue. So what I think is happening is a slight Doppler effect plus reflected sound coming back hitting the microphones. The electronic instruments are going through the speakers whereas the drums are close to the microphones. Of coarse this is happening in milliseconds. :smoke:
