I live in Albertville.  North west of Minneapolis about 25 minutes.

As soon as it warms up, even a little, I will be able to get into the garage and get back to the weather-stalled XLS encore and servo sub project for my brother, and then SuperV for me, and a bottlehead amp.

Stupid MN weather.

Built these GR surounds for a friend a few years back, he wanted them painted the same color as his walls so they didn't stand out.

I know this is cheating compared to really building but I wanted to try them anyway.  PE curved sided gloss black enclosures.

Hi all Audio Circle members.
I have four (04) pairs of speakers all using GR Research drivers,
but even if I have plenty of pictures of them, I will not post them here.
I just want to avoid any unpleasant comments.
However, I am very happy with all my built and the sound of all of them.
Thanks Danny.

Some of you have already seen my work...

I am not a wood working guy, so this was an easy way to build a pair.

Neil,
Is that solid Cheery? WOW! Cheery is one of the most beautiful woods especially when left natural. Not sure if you tinted it slightly, but it's really spectacular! The craftsmanship, wood choice, and finish are all first class!!

Thanks!  The sub is one of the AV123 sub drivers that I got from Danny for cheap and one of Danny's amps. The sealed version of the sub had a lot more output for movies but the ob version is more refined for music and suits me very well.   I am not much for describing sound but I would call it very musical and it does not draw attention to itself.   FYI,I listen to jazz, classical and pop.

Thanks Guys, I used General Finishes, Arm-R-Seal, sanding between each of the several coats, 5 or 6. I then wet sanded 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit, and polished with 3m's swirl remover and a coat of wax. Very labor intensive, but very happy with the end results.

Larry,  all solid Cherry except for sides and back, I used 1/4 mdf core ply. No tint or stain, Cherry just takes on a richer, darker hue as it ages. It is my favorite wood to work with right now, just finished up a bathroom vanity that actually came out nicer than the speakers.
Thanks again for the compliments

Did you spray or brush the Arm-R-Seal? Also, what wax do you use?

Like a few others, it's sort of cheating when you buy the cabinets, but the veneering had proved to be too much for me... and AV123 cabinets were such deals!

I mostly use General Finishes on projects but I have not tried the Arm R Seal very much, looks like I need to experiment with it more.

The General Finishes Seal-A-Seal and Arm-R-Seal is good stuff.  Easy to apply with a lint-free disposable shop towel pad.  One coat SAC & up to 3-4 coats ARS easy-peasy and it looks great.

Larry..If you use wax on top be careful with auto products as they often contain silicone oil (polysiloxanes). Once you get silicones on a finish it's r-e-a-l-l-y hard to repair or refinish the piece as silicones will prevent new finish coats wetting the surface.  Removing silicones is also very difficult.  If you want to wax use something like Johnsons Paste Wax.  It's carnuba and polyethylene waxes, no silicones.  If you need to remove it wipe a piece down with mineral spirits, prepare the surface & recoat.

FWIW.."Lemon Pledge" smells nice, but it's made with siloxanes..bad news on good wood or wood finishes.

I just bought a pair of v2's with a down payment, sorry im struggling. I cannot wait. Thank you Danny for working with me. Sorry Danny has the pics since I do not have them at home yet. I bought really because Danny is in Texas 4 hours from me. I supported llano and white audio labs for years, now I am supporting GR research. Plus im dying to try ob speakers. I hope they live up to expectations.

Guys,

Somehow I've missed this thread. I'm one of those builders who usually leaves speaker projects in raw wood. After I check out a design principle, they get scrapped or sold to friends. ( I have a lot to learn, and I learn best by doing.)

That said, WOW!!! You guys do very nice work. I hope more cool pics get put up. I really enjoy them. Makes me want to properly finish & keep something. This is a great thread.

This is the built-out version of the first cabinet photo on this thread. Thanks to Jon Parkhurst for building the cabinet with 1" Baltic birch construction, to Danny for the kit, and to the Skiing Ninja for putting it all together. Also thanks to me for requesting the 1" roundovers, the  extra inputs, and the removable back board.

Bet you liked those removable backs!!!  Why two sets of inputs?
Title: Re: GR stuff WE (Group) have built-The Picture Edition
Post by: Milehighguy on 28 Jul 2013, 05:52 pm
The two sets of inputs are in parallel (not biwire) to allow for any type of wire termination to be used. The removable back was more of a benefit to the Skiing Ninja as he did all the assembly work. I'm debating leaving the back removable versus gluing it on.

Put a little silicone caulk in there so if you ever would have to get it off you can but it will still seal it tight. Looks great.

Thanks. And thanks for the amazing deal on the cabinets. I wasn't really in the market for these speakers but the price and quality of the cabinets was too good to pass up. Now I have them playing quietly all the time to speed up the breaking in process, especially of the platinum sonicaps. They sound great already, especially the soundstage and imaging, and I expect them to get even better.

Looks like the driver spacing was increased slightly. I wouldn't say that caused a "problem" but the vertical off axis response and driver blending my not be quite as smooth as it would have been otherwise.

Good call on the dual sets of binding posts. After you have some burn in time on them you might be able to switch between the two sets and give some feedback on the differences.

Thank you Scott, WireNut and Todd Willhoit for your comments.

@ WireNut: That is NC Metallic Black with less glitters applied using compressor and spray gun. After 72 hours of curing, hand rubbed and wax polished (Formula 1).

@Todd Willhoit : It is not veneer, self adhesive PVC laminate.

Some New Stuff..  ( Danny, make this a sticky?)

I couldn't leave well enough alone so I cut 45 degree bevels on the front baffle,
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=109161)

and 10 degrees on the rear.

And now they are refinished and complete.

These are being used full range with the Acoustat 1+1s for the bass from 30-60hz which was an easy integration. This setup is temporary until I pull the trigger on the 2 or 3-8" "speaker stands" Danny is working on or maybe a 2-12" in a similar type stand.

The NS3s are fully upgraded with all the add-ons Danny created for this speaker.  With about 80 hours on them they sound pretty darn good but as I understand, they will get better until they are fully broken in.

BTW, They are way above ear level because I am using stands I used for other speakers connected to the Acoustats until I purchase others.  Also, I have the third box completed too.  I started with 3 just in case I screwed something up.

The matching bases is a great idea. The speakers and subs look like they are a system, and the bases give both cabinets a larger footprint for stability.

I will not call it marquetry. When I cut the miter angles on the rails to make the top, I endeded up with triangles as leftovers and didn't want to throw away and decided to do what you see with touches of oak to fill the voids. When I get home I will take a better picture for you.

You are correct; the box itself is all MDF in satin black and the top, feet and front + the marquetry look is solid wood, this design made with leftovers.

F12G SERVO SUB

I read about the good and bad of various sub-woofer variations, including infinity baffles, but I kept coming to the sealed sub; accuracy attracted me more so than the sonic boom.  I looked into Rythmic and its servo technology and the way Ryan and Danny explained how it works made sense to me, but because I was busy building surrounds and center channel from Danny’s kits, I was not ready to commit to anything.  When all were completed and put to service, I had more time to evaluate my needs.

It took me a little while to make a decision because I was not sure whether I will need two subs and if that would have been the case; you all know that it is better to cut both at the same time.  I did some reading and calculations and figured that one may be enough for what I was looking for, the area I have is 1700 cu/ft., open space.  I became more familiar with the servo idea and was sold on the paper-based F12G from Danny.  The main reason I went with the paper and not the aluminum is because I listen more to music than movies. I know, I know the new trend is the OB subs and as much as I like them I had to let them go for now; I do not have the real estate they required.

Talking about the build, I followed Danny’s recipe for his sandbox to the letter, except that I cut rabbets for the internal braces and enclosed the electronics in its own box because I used fiberglass and did not want any of it touching the back side of the amp.  The inside also has No-Rez, one full sheet as suggested and all joints are sealed with silicone caulk.

As in my previous builds, there are no mechanical fasteners anywhere, but I used plenty of cookies mostly for alignment purposes.  As far as the sand, make sure to tap the sides with a rubber mallet as you fill the cavities because this helps to compact the sand; if you do not tap it, you may think it is compacted, but will ended up with voids once you put the sub to service.  I finished the sides with rattle can satin black.  The top, front and feet is walnut with accents in oak and finished in satin medium dark walnut from Watco.

Setting it up took many trials, issues with time/phase alignment mostly; relying on my old ears and no instruments like a SPL meter is a bit frustrating, but once I figured out how to tune it, it was best to leave phase at zero and play around with delay distance from the ProPro until I managed to sync the sub with the fronts the best I could.  I am still playing with the other controls and getting familiar with what they do, but for now the sub is set at 80Hz crossover from my PrePro and recommended settings in the sub end, it sounds very good.  I am running XLR cable to the sub simply because the cable is going over the ceiling and down for a run of about 30-ft.

I have subjected the sub to different content, from movies to music of all sorts and I am impressed with its performance and the way it projects the sound.  I may add that I did not have much of a problem about location, it is sitting along the longest wall and from my sitting position all the bass seems to emanate from the main and center speakers.  The more I listen to my favorite songs, the more I like the sub, new bass content pops here and there, at times it seems like I am playing a different song; I can also feel it and when that happens I know the sub is going subsonic….awesome!!  The SPL generated from this one sub gently rattles my house with authority and sufficient thump without displacing my china or glassware, and there are so far no complaints from neighbors at all and the volume is at 50%!!  I bet if I cover or disguise the sub, friends will be wondering how my smaller speakers are able to reproduce sounds that low (I have not had friends over yet.)

Here are some pictures of the finished sub; sorry, I did not documented the build since it is basically a copy of the sand box Danny provided, but dressed differently as mentioned above.

Thank you Danny for your guidance, patience and for providing the plans for the box. I am really happy with the sound from this sub, it really complemented the overall sound without being intrusive with colorations or the so called sonic boom.

A couple more builds completed since my entry in 2013, hard to believe this thread started that long ago.

The original Wedgie, I love this speaker:

The bass section ultimately didn’t work for me, I believe I built it too small and the output of the drivers had a negative impact on each other.  I am currently (not actively :duh:) revisiting this speaker with a different bass solution.

NX Otica MTM with Stereo H Frame Servo Bass (my Current speaker):
This is a great speaker, easily fills my largish space, excellent imaging and beautiful tone.  I learned a lot about finishing on this build thanks to this community.

Really love the creative way you integrated the monitors, even including the cool grill shape.  Danny should steal that idea from you post haste :P

Just completed a pair of GR A/V-3 MTM's. They are easily the nicest sounding speakers I have ever owned. Am very pleased with the image they produce, even in what is obviously not an optimized room environment.

Looking through this thread I see we need some of the new NX-Studio Monitors. Just built these for my dad. (March 2020 Right as the world was catching the flu.)

These are Danny's newest design at the time of this posting. They are a hybrid design with an open baffle tweeter and a sealed box lower section. Designed to be able to be placed close to the wall but work great well out in the room as well. And as the name implies they are great for monitoring as well. I can hear the subtlest if details. Great tone and incredibly smooth sounding.

This is one impressive sounding speaker! Truly world class high end audio! Many thanks to Danny for your contributions to the audio world! :thumb:

Sonicjoy,

Have you thought about building speakers as a way to make a few $$ during this time of whatever?
Title: Re: GR stuff WE (Group) have built-The Picture Edition
Post by: Sonicjoy on 3 Apr 2020, 03:27 pm
Funny you should ask because I have. However getting materials is proving to be a problem now. Danny is having trouble getting stuff as well. The outfit I get my wood and MDF from is now closed until further notice and I live on an island so running to Home Depot is problematic as well.

Good thought though.

The X-Omni is the surround for the X-Statik, not the A/V-O. The X-Omni does exist. It’s the save as the A/V-O but uses the same drivers as the X-Statik and X-Voce

I appreciate the info, but I'll be using the A/V-O because I already have them built and working. More of a repurposing than anything. The X-Statics replaced them as the L/R

Edit: They do get pulled out into the room when I'm listening to music. For everyday TV though they stay back and out of the way.

Back when I built houses we would occasionally beat the kitchen cabinets with chains and put scorch marks on them to make them look old. Now they have a name for that, distressed.  :thumb:

Hey guys, just wanted to share a project update real quick. I've posted some images and questions elsewhere in this forum, but will summarize here. Three to four months ago I had never even considered building a speaker and now my first project is nearly complete. There are some spectacular build threads on this site of large complex designs, but my system is a little simpler. Hopefully some of the other beginners out there will be encouraged.

Veneer is rift sawn white oak with one coat Weatherwood Reclamation reactive stain (two coats on sub) plus one coat of Waterlox sealer and six coats Waterlox satin finish. Its a copy of the finish described by Peter Rawlings on his youtube channel, but mine came out much darker due to the veneer type.

System is very budget oriented - Onkyo integrated and CD player, Arylic streamer, Rega TT. I selected the base XLS x-over, no-no res, base level terminals. I have some plans for improvements, but am really enjoying them as-built. I'm not getting much performance out of the sub just yet - hope to make some improvements there soon...

Finally finished my XLS project. Veneer is rift sawn white oak with one coat of Weatherwood Reclamation, one coat of Waterlox sealer and six coats Waterlox satin finish. I followed the same process as Peter on one of his youtube videos, but got a very different result. Rift sawn oak seems to be much more reactive with this type of stain. They turned out way darker than I wanted, but I like them anyway. sorry i dont know how to rotate the image

I love darker stains on wood, those look amazing.

I like 'em. It's been a while since I've seen the pair I did on YouTube, but I think I like yours better. I've found there's an element of unpredictability when using the reactive stains. Kinda the nature of the beast, I suppose. Anyway, Kudos on your project!

I'm enjoying the dark color as well even though it was kind of an accident. I emailed Weatherwood and they suggest one of their finish products called White Oil. It will bring out more of the grey tones in the reactive stain. I may try that on my next project.

Kind of reminds me of the music instrument world where they beat up a guitar or bass to make it look really old, they refer to it as a relic finish. I wonder how you could distress or relic speakers? Maybe make some rings on the top where the wife put a plant and damaged the finish, push in the dome tweeter from the toddler, or recreate when the cat used the speaker cover as a scratching post.  :x

I really like Danny's voicing of the speakers, so much that I’m midway thru building the SLS tower model now. The option of having the port forward facing solves a right channel placement problem I have.
