Here is a used DAC DAC HS for sale at a very good price: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=160395.0

There are a number of USB-SPDIF converters that could fit your budget, but I would recommend one from DAC as a component to save for.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Wow! $395? If I had the extra funds, I would buy that. My buddy Rex owns one and loves it. He currently owns 7 or 8 dacs now and the dac dac is his favorite.

If you can stretch the budget just a little ($599), the Schiit Bifrost Multibit really unravels gobs of information from Redbook material, with outstanding timbre, texture, microdynamics, & soundstage. Plus it's got their Gen 5 transformer coupled USB receiver (many sub $500 dacs have poor USB implementation). A superb long-term investment.

I have the Schiit Bifrost (not multi-bit version though) that is in storage.  It was my first 'real' DAC.  I think it an excellent entry DAC, and is a good value for the money.  I never had any issues with mine.

I do as well! I had planned to upgrade to Multibit but I was able to save up and get a Yggdrasil recently. Still, the base Bifrost is quite a DAC for the price!

My buddy Rex owns a couple of the IFI DAC's, but he says the DAC DAC is better. That used one at $375 is a steal.

That new Gala Dac looks interesting for $395, and it includes a preamp.

+1  Here's some measurements:

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-topping-dx7s-dac-and-headphone-amp.2378/

DAC technology continues to advance quickly, so smart not to "over invest", especially in "over built" construction or aesthetics.  Schiit offers swap out guts on several of their models and PS Audio offers free software upgrades to their top models as ways to avoid obsolesce.
