Volume Knob
« on: 14 Jul 2011, 01:05 am »
This morning I got a shock when I turn on my source and the volume was at its maximum!!!  :o I can hear the driver were distorting at max volume (first shock - second my heart sank) and I immediately turn it down. Checked the speakers cones and both looks good, turn up softly, and still sound as good - thank God. Hope it didn't damage anything...

Lesson learnt. With kids or nosy folks around I suggest to turn off the source and lower the volume of the system. Check the volume closeup first before anything else. That way it won't blast you off the chair!

James - I think I have read this somewhere in this forum...I think its good to have a LED on the volume knob, its actually an essential feature. When the room is dark and I can hardly see where the volume is at without getting up and take a look at it close up.   :)

I'm happy that everything seems to be okay.  It's happened to me before, years ago, not with Bryston gear but an old 80's Kenwood pre/pwr combo.  Blew both tweeters on the speakers.  You're fortunate to come away free.   :o

Well, luckily everything is fine :D. This happened to me too. since then I always check the volume before I turn on my amp. even with an led in the volume knob if there is not enough light, you will not know if it is all the way up or all the way down :?. you will only see just the light. I guess you just have to get more light to see your gears lol.

I have my stuff in the black finish. I have always added a stripe of white sticky paper (actually a cut bit of lettering tape) across the knob at the "invisible' pointer spot. So from a distance i can see exactly where the knob is. i used this on my prior preamp, an Adcom 750, and also have the same effect on my Audio Research Sp-15 on the dB, vol, selector, and phono resistance loading knobs.
On my Bryston BP-26 i have the marking on the Volume and the selector.
It is just a slender slip of tape that can easily be removed, but is VERY useful when it is there on the knobs.

I actually have a standing lamp aimed straight at the controls but the marking on the knobs is just a pain. I may remove the knob and bring it to a specialist for some modification...I am thinking drilling a recess of about 3mm to 5mm in diameter and fill it with something reflective?? Any suggestions??

Just drill a small hole on the front of knob and fill it with white paint

On my previous preamp,Bat VK5i I mistakenly hit the gain button on the remote in the dark and destroyed an EMIM with a 4bst drving the highs on a pair of infinity epsilons.Could not find a replacement planar so I upgraded my whole system.
Ouch  but the sound  :thumb:!

Functional - yes....a little triclops like - yes.   Perhaps, some glow in the dark dots might help in low light situations...

I was just going to suggest this only I use a blaze orange dot.  If you listen in the dark a small quartz halogen flashlight works well if you need to see the pre from a distance.

Not sure where to find it but either glow in the dark dots or regular dots painted with glow in the dark paint should work.  If you do some Googling you'll find a variety of products out there.

Better check with James.  Glow in the dark might raise the noise floor in the BP26 and you know how Bryston feels about noise.  You might void your warranty.
