Visit to Son Ideal in Montreal

Visit to Son Ideal in Montreal,
The Renovations that Claude has made will be a big plus for future sales.
The room size, height of the ceiling Wow to be seen.
I found that there was a lot of Echo in the Room.

Claude had set up a Pair of Tannoy Speakers somewhere around 16K.
To be honest I was not impressed, there was almost no Bass, and the highs were crisp and clear.
The Tannoys were connected to 2 x 28BBST2  BP26/MPS2 BDA-1 BCD-1 via SPDIF DIGITAL RCA/ RCA

I had mentioned to Claude that I prefer the Quality of the sound coming out of the
 AES-EBU XLR digital connection.

Claude, and Robert were going to do some tests.

I said that I would be back to hear His B&W 802D?S along with the Bryston Gear to hear Some Thunder!

Hi Robert,

Did Claude say why he prefers the BCD-1 through the BDA-1 as opposed to on its own?  I'm aware that you do as well albeit by the AES/EBU connection.  I recall some earlier discussion that the BCD-1 alone will have better jitter control than if connected to an external DAC.  I think James has mentioned this more than once.  It would be interesting to hear a Bryston dealer's take on this.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, I never asked what he prefers. I told him that I prefer AES-EBU XLR connection
The sound to me is Clean, Clear, and Full.
Over the SPDIF RCA / RCA sound.

I?m a Buddy of Claude?s Don't get me wrong; I?ve been purchasing my gear from him over the past 30 years and more.

He was happy to show me his Renovations. Very Proud indeed.

The room as it is Now, has more Echo then my House !
Claude is working on it, more pictures more filler.
That kind of thing.

I told him I wanted to hear the Thunder.
He had said when he is ready he Will !

Does AES/EBU to the BDA-1 sound better than BCD-1 by itself?

Bill, your question was ...
Does AES/EBU to the BDA-1 sound better than BCD-1 by itself?

Bill in my eyes they are both perfect with and with out the BDA-1
The BDA-1  I find just cleans up. what's beening feeded into it.
The separation of highs lows mids are just Perfect with the BDA-1.

As I said Claude was using From BCD-1 to BDA-1 SPDIf Rca/Rca.
I did not enjoy what my ears Herd.
A little ways back I sent in to Bryston the same Type of SPDIF cable RCA/RCA to be Modified to RCA /BNC
I find it better then the RCA/RCA Cable.

But still leave my BDA-1 set at the AES-EBU Position.
Just a matter of Good Taste..... Like a Good Bottle of Red Wine !

Nice! I live in Rochester but try to get up to Montreal when I can, and I always try to stop by Son Ideal. I bought a used preamp from them that sounded amazing with some Triangle speakers they had in the store but just didn't work in my system when I got it home. They had no problem letting me exchange it toward a Clearaudio turntable, which I thought was really pretty decent of them.

Robert, I mentioned the echo in one of my posts when I visited in June to listen to the CLX. Claude did not seem concerned and mentioned that most people like the experience. I also thought there was too much but I only listened to the Quads and the ML CLX which do not really like echo.

He has a wonderful store and is my second choice of dealers besides my one at home even though he does not sell Bryston. I have always bought through James so far but Claude will be my choice next in line. he is a great guy and does not mind you touching his gear even though you may not be buying on the spot.

You will definitely want to do that. The combo also delivers with finesse at lower volume levels, more than living up to expectations.

Had the pleasure of dropping in on Son Ideal when I was in Montreal recently for the Jazz Festival. Although I was up front about not being there to buy anything on this trip, Claude graciously setup a demo with the 28B SST Squared amps connected to B&W 802 speakers (and Bryston CD player and preamp). One of the discs we used as demo material was Patricia Barber's "Cole Porter Mix", much of which I had experienced live at her concert the evening before. Sounded good both times. :>)

Hi Robert,

Touche! on the bottle of good red wine.  I find if consumed while listening it will increase the resolution of any player or DAC!!

Hi Sorry for the late response.

We visited during the International Jazz Festival.  Nice store lots of eye candy.  Everyone knows James and Chris.

I am not sure if we heard the thunder.
