YIKES!!!!! :o
Dust covers starting at $300 for a plastic box!! OK, acrylic. I am thinking $1.99 plastic tub from Walmart. Cheap, cheerful, and brilliant white. But hey, it is the "Sterling" brand.
Suggestions for a more affordable VPI Prime Scout cover please.

Years ago I removed the dust cover from my oracle Delphi and replaced it with a large plastic bag. The plastic bag did a better job of keeping dust out, but the primary reason I ditched the dust cover is it adversely affected the sound.

There are cheaper options on ebay, but you have to look around. Even there, a new one will set you back at least $150...
-
I make such for under 90 USD
But shipping even within the Country is very difficult, forget international

rikhav, have you made one for a Wilson Benesch Circle turntable?

rikhav, have you made one for a Wilson Benesch Circle turntable?
Not yet as no one owning one has ordered from me
But it should be pretty easy to make until it's in a square or a rectangular form as it does not require a mould to be made
Making a mould for single piece makes the price too high
-
I would be interested in you making me one for that price, how would we go about this?

They tend to resonate and carry those resonances into the turntable structure and maybe that's why. I'd put a drafting weight (basically a leather bag with a couple pounds of sand in it) on top of mine while playing and that seemed to help.
I agree, $300 seems absurd but we are talking about a limited-production piece that is basically a big box of air while it is sitting in the warehouse, so a higher overhead item than one might initially think.
Also, all the ones I had, the plastic seemed to attract dust so I'm not sure they helped all that much.

rikhav, I do not understand this sentence: "But it should be pretty easy to make until it's in a square or a rectangular form as it does not require a mould to be made"
easy to make UNTIL it's in a square or rectangular form??
Anyway the Wilson Benesche CIRCLE is a circular format, so a circular dust cover would be appropriate. And a mold would not be mandatory.

To make any bent shape like a sloping side panel or say sides of a circular cover , a simple cut job won't do. A special mould will be needed to get that curve and for a single piece becomes expensive

Hi,
I have an ARXA turntable I'm restoring. The dust cover takes a diamond cutter to put it back on when the record is playing. Thats important! When the sun is shining thru the window look at all the dust. The dust will just go right back into the grooves upon your 20 minutes of play. The design of the AR-XA had no hinge on the player and the dust cover could abrade the edges of the AR's walnut base.
I went to Home Depot and spent about 20 bucks to get every thing I needed to make something better. The cover is a clear storage box called Sterilite and they have pieces of plywood already cut to size. Wander around the hinge department and when in the wood isle look for strips of red oak or anything else.
My cover stays up when needed and comes down to protect against dust when called for....I had an extra AR logo so I made it look AR-ish. It works great!.......it was real easy and I'd like to share....Mark Korda

Digital Deck Covers make custom fabric and faux leather covers for any equipment including turntables. They have a data base of tables or you can custom order any size. Very inexpensive and a joy to work with, I got the faux leather one for my VPI.

Hi mix4fix
Sorry to create confusion but I should have mentioned that I am from India
So yeah I can make the dustcover as I posted pictures for 90 to 100 USD or under it but shipping would be a killer from India to USA or any other country
Plus , there is always a fear of the cover getting damage in transit and to avoid that will need heavier packing which would also increase costs
-
I have this dust cover available for $75. Would need to be local sale in the Seattle/ Tacoma area because to ship safely is too expensive. I don't remember the exact cost to ship, it was about four months ago and to have the UPS store pack and ship was about $125.

These guys made a custom heavy cloth cover for my Acoustic Solid turntable and I like it. It's seams are rigid enough to be free-standing and doesn't contact the table or arm. It may be of interest to you if you don't require a cover during record playing. Here's a link to the Prime Scout model:

 I'm having more and more senior moments! :?
-
I had these folks make me one. It cost $135 shipped. If you need notches cut out, the price goes way up, so I just had them make the back side an inch shorter so the cables could come out. Mine is 1/4 inch thick. It's best to call them to discuss dimensions, because they consider the length to be what we would call the width. Make sure they know which side to cut!

NP at all, I was mostly just agreeing with you, and any added publicity for these folks is good. :thumb:

+1
Just wanted to refresh this thread because I absolutely abhor the ripoff audiophile specialty companies that charge outrageous prices. They can't use the tired old "but we gotta cover R & D and super rare expensive material costs" arguement. Gimme a break!
It's a plastic box fer chrissakes, not rocket science! :rotflmao:
This is basically the same thing for much less. SHOPPOP does great work and ships fast with safe packaging. Cost me about $125 shipped for 1/4 inch thick.

Nice! :thumb:
I assume you added the side handles?
What is the table / arm?
-
Yes, I added the handles. The table is a Mobile Fidelity Ultradeck.
-
Wow.....never heard of it. And I'm a gear junkie! 8)
Edit: just googled on it.....seems to be widely available in the usual online audio outlets......but I hadn't come across any owner comments on it.....hence, my ignorance.
-
It's only been out a couple or three years. As far as the handles, I got tired of cleaning the acrylic of finger smudges!
-
nice job Spence ! :thumb:

I grab two diagonal 90 degree corners and lift. Minimal finger contact on pointed surface, so no smudges.

Thanks twitch54.
sunnydaze,
I posted comments on a couple other boards about it. A-Gon and Audiokarma if I remember correctly.
-
Since my main concern is keeping turntable / arm getting damaged when not in use, I just use an Avid flat cover which I modified as my tonearm is bigger then normal. The cover cost £90.

Reminds me of the cover on Kuzma Stabi "s" I once owned. Stabi is a great table. :thumb:

Just ordered one for my new turntable. $200 shipped. ClearAudio wanted at least twice that.
Thanks for your link!

How did you add the handles? Is it adhered by glue or are they somehow screwed in? BTW, it is possible to safely screw into acrylic without cracking it?
-
Just to followup, there's a great video I found on YouTube on making screw holes in acrylic here
https://youtu.be/EH3u8m_kCu0
There is another one as well (from the same fellow) that describes the fabrication method of creating displays etc. from acrylic, plexiglass materials.

Hope this helps out your DIY dustcovers.

If I remember right, I got the handles at Lowes. They're just screwed on. I used blue painters tape, marked the holes on the tape, then put the tape on the dust cover and drilled the holes with a regular drill bit, being careful not to apply too much pressure. Take your time, and use a tiny bit to start a pilot hole first, so the larger bit doesn't slide around and scratch the acrylic when you start your final hole. Place the dust cover on it's side, keep your drill straight up and down to avoid it sliding, and drill from the inside.

I just noticed the deck beneath the cover, how do you like the Mofi deck? I was thinking about that one but ultimately got a better deal on a Pro-Ject 2xperience SB. I always wondered what the other deck would have sounded like.
Cheers!

I love the thing. It's simple, tracks great, and sounds rich.

Had mine made at a acrylic shop that makes displays.
Price was about 130.00can.
Had it made so the cabling and pc had access cutouts and also the front top was cut at an angle so I could change LPs without having to remove whole cover, which also is a hinged

Wow 🤩 can you let members know the vendor. That’s pretty nice work with all those extras! Thank you.

The company is called PG plastics in Edmonton Alberta.
The wifey corrected me on price.
Price was $80.00 plus shipping which came to $130.00

Thank you, I will definitely look into this for a different project. I think they'll be a good resource based on the store's skill level.

Just an update on my cover. I'm still liking my purchase but I'm kicking myself for getting 1/4" instead of 1/8". This baby is solid and heavy. Oh well. it still works great and half the price of the official one from ClearAudio. Speaking of which, my ClearAudio dealer was here recently and commented on how well done this dust cover is. That kinda surprised me.

Ron, LOL a dust cover heavy ?? you need to get back in the gym !

Am I correct in guessing the isolation system is inverted plastic drink cups? :rotflmao:

I use an extra large bandana. Cheap and runs through the washing machine with no problems.

I don't believe a cheap plastic cup will work well. You need a Solo. They have the angles to support weight.

Fruit cups filled with a special damping material made for boat hulls and a hard rubber ball between the cup and the TT feet. Works well.
