6j5 + 6j5 to 6SN7 Vacuum Tube socket Adapter
« on: 30 Dec 2020, 12:06 am »
I chanced upon this ad while searching for a Taiwan-based tube seller. In my limited experience with tubes, I've never seen anything like this before. Why would someone choose to use this, and what <if any> benefits can be achieved with this?

[The ad is mostly in Mandarin Chinese.]

I have tube adapters for tube rolling fun and trying out different "flavors".  You can get 6j5 cheap.  No real advantage in using them, just different.

Hi Michael,

First I took a look at the data sheet for the 6J5 and the 6SN7 here:
https://frank.pocnet.net/sheets/049/6/6J5.pdf
https://frank.pocnet.net/sheets/127/6/6SN7GT.pdf

The 6J5 is a single triode and the 6SN7 is a dual triode.  They share almost identicle operating parameters so what they have done is make an adapter that rewires the pinouts and this will allow the user to replace an expensive 6SN7 with a pair of 6J5 tubes that cost $8-$15 each for most of the metal envelope versions.  Glass ones appear to be upwards of $30 but that's still much cheaper than what some of the bespoke 5SN7 tubes can go for.

Make sense?  Let me know if you are going to buy any of the adapters I'd be interested in joining the buy with you to get a pair.  No biggie if you aren't, just throwin' it out there.

Jake

Rats...I forgot to hit send last night.

Jake! I trust you're staying warm and <even more importantly> avoiding the bug.

I can buy a couple for you - no problem. You'll just have to wait until April or May before I could mail them to you. Or (I say with a mischievous smile) you could wait until mid-July because I'm going to be in your area then. Our son is scheduled to get married in Glacier National Park in July, and we intend to enjoy a bit of a road trip before and after. Eastern WA, western ID, and BC <assuming borders are open> would be in our itinerary.

Lemme know if you want a couple of the adapters. I'll snap them up for you. No need to wait until July.

Michael

Hi Bud,

Stayin' safe and warm.  My current situation affords me lots of isolation and I'm good with that.  Watching the snow melt.

Yes, I would like to get a pair if you can snag them.  Now you aren't going to just order them through the website are you?  I could do that myself.

I'll PM you.

Actually, I was planning to order them from the website. They're not in a store. For some reason, it didn't occur to me that you could order them.  :duh: I'm growing senile.

Check out eBay. They have these adaptors anywhere from $16 to $30

Similar idea is to use this adapter for 7193/2C22 tubes.

I purchased a pair of adapters and several pairs of tubes.  Very lively sound in the gain position of my Freya.  They just fit.

2c22 excellent tube, like it better than 6j5. If you have small children around beware of the plate cap that carries high voltage.

I've never understood why anyone would go the dual 6J5 adapter route, except to just play around with more tube rolling.  One can buy good quality 6SN7 tubes for $15 or so, which is less expensive than the adapter and two 6J5 tubes.  I've picked up Baldwin-labeled Sylvania 6SN7 and 1960s Westinghouse 6SN7GTB for $15 or so and found them to be excellent tubes.  In fact, in my system the Westinghouse sound better to my ears than far more expensive tubes like the RCA 5692 and vintage Tung-sol 6SN7.
