Thanks Paul!  FYI at today's rates 350 Pounds is $554.36.

Can anyone comment on the SR-5 AC vs. DC options?  I.e. pros and cons of each, sonic attributes, etc.

SR5-12 AC input and SR5-18v5 AC input                       £350
SR5-12 DC input and SR5-18v5 DC input                       £350

The SR5-12 AC input is to be used with mid 2010 and later Mac Minis that have had the internal switching power supply removed and then modified with a DC cable running from the mother board to the back panel. This power supply will plug into the wall outlet.

The SR5-18v5 AC input is to be used for pre-2010 Mac Minis that come stock with an external switching power supply. You do need to supply your own DC cable and connector to attach to the Mac Mini.

The SR5-12 DC is also to be used with modified 2010 and later Mac Minis but is designed to only accept a DC input from batteries.
Same with the SR85-18v5 DC except for use with older Mac Minis.

As far as sonic differences, you would have to have both in your system to compare. Personally, I prefer the sound of a supply run purely from the AC. Others feel the hassles of battery power is worth it.

In any case, 2010 and later Mac Minis DO have to be modded to use any of the supplies. The earlier Macs need the DC cable sent to Paul to be modded to use with his supply.

I'd agree.  AC power is the way to go.

Hi Wayne,

Welcome, and thank you for detailing the power supply applications so thoroughly. I cannot really add to this other than I can mod the 2010/2011 Minis for those that require this.

Regards,
Paul

Paul,
What would the added cost be for the mod?

Personally, I prefer the sound of a supply run purely from the AC. Others feel the hassles of battery power is worth it.

Wayne, can you describe what you hear as the difference?  I've been running my Sensation on battery and it has a much more relaxed and quiet sound than on the regular AC power supply.  That said, I haven't tried the upgraded AC supplies...

Abernadi,

I normally charge £100 for the Mod but I will reduce this to £80 if linked with the reduced price SR5 power supplies for the duration of the offer. Any additional shipping costs incurred for the return shipping will have to be paid for too.

The SR5-21/27 works very well with the Sensation if you set the power supply output voltage to 30v. See :-

Hi Paul

I'm posting on your recommendation after you prompted me from Art of Sound. I am definitely interested in a complete solution please, though just a little unclear on which SR5 derivative I can get away with. As you noted, I run my mini "lean", so is this one appropriate?

"SR3-12 AC input and SR3-18v5 AC input          (only available as an AC input power supply)"

- or will I need a SR5-18.5 AC input?

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Alan,

Bob Lloyd has run his 2009 Mini on the SR3-18v5 but he has removed everything he can that draws power from the Mini and replaced the Hard drive with a low power SSD. I think you should ask Bob how far you should go with this as he has real time experience.

Several customers have asked if the SR5 can be used with other items of equipment besides the Mac Mini.

In fact it can be set up for the following range of output voltage and continuous output current specifications :

3v3 @ 10 amps
5v @ 9 amps
6v @ 8.5 amps
9v @ 7.5 amps
12v @ 6.5 amps
15v @ 5 amps
18v5 @ 4.5 amps
21v @ 4 amps
24v @ 3.5 amps
27v @ 3 amps
30v @ 3 amps

This covers a wide range of equipment requirements. The offer price can apply to any of the above options until the offer closes on 30th November. DC lead connectors can be customised to suit the equipment you want to power. There may be a small additional charge for this if the required connector is expensive.

Paul

This is precisely the thread I've been waiting for!

I've made an enquiry to Paul re the AC version and modification of the power cord.

Do we have any more user feedback to share?

There are only 16 days left for the "Group Buy" SR5 offer. After 30th November the price returns to normal.

I saw your post on CA as well.  I'd also email as Paul is getting an operation but this way you will be in queue.  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=111714.0
