just a quick update-----went with the Airport Express for monetary reasons (uncertain job situation) and purchased a mini tos to tos glass fiber cable from Beresford North America. Hooked Airport Express up with no prob but spazzed out trying to open file sharing between mac and mac mini. Cant seem to acess any music. Will work on it again tonite and try to download something onto itunes and see if i get music.

Sugbob, what exactly are you trying to accomplish for playback with the Mac(laptop?/desktop?) and mac mini?

trying to play itunes etc... thru my RWA Isabellina DAC via a mac mini which is set up in another room.

Taking a couple of steps back

1. After successfully setting up the Airport Express using the Airport Utility application....

2. Make sure music is sent to the Airport Express:

On the main computer (Mac mini) running iTunes:
You must choose where the music is being directed. In Itunes there should be a button with a speaker icon on the bottom gray bar, at the right of your iTunes window. Clicking the button presents output options: Computer(default), Airport Express name or multiple. Choose your AE.  If the AE is not properly set up, offline, or not powered, the output selection button will not be present.

Above, your phrase "file sharing" had me wondering what you were trying to do. It may be simply using a macbook as a remote control unit. Which it can, but let's separate the two different tasks. Focus on getting music to the AE and DAC first. Once that is achieved then we can tackle the remote function.

Also, in case you didn't know, AC has an Apple specific circle. http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=131.0

Cheers,
ed

All,

Back to optical cables:

A good customer recommend this glass optical cable -

https://www.gcaudio.com/cgi-bin/store/showProduct.cgi?id=197

and this one:

http://www.lifatec.com/toslink2.html

These are supposed to be very good (haven't tried 'em yet).

Best regards,

Vinnie
