Thanks Jack,

It's seeing yours and Emilio's that got me to go walnut. Darren and I looked long and hard for the baffle pieces. He finally found some amazing pieces near him locally.

Where the hell is he these days anyway?

Walnut was not my first choice but it has become my favorite by far. Dave Ellis talked me into it because he had these already made and sent me pictures. He described them as "the kind of wood on a good shotgun stock" or something to that affect. He was 100% correct. They look like cool oiled gun stocks. Everyone who has seen these in my house has commented on their beauty and the knuckle test will give you sore knuckles with Dave's cabinets.

I think Darren is semi-retired from the cabinet making business. As I recall, and wanted to devote more time to his family. He did very nice work and was a good guy. Is a good guy! He made some of the coolest speakers I have seen. I hope he's doing well.

Been a year or so but thought I would check in - haven't really stuffed my speakers properly yet or got good speaker cable. But here goes:
Jim Dory
Age: over 50
Located Nome Alaska
Occ: Engineer Tech - IT admin
Newly married, dinks (double income no kids)

hobbled by: playing old time banjo, winter activities (who'd thought in Nome?), jeeps, and computers/llinux

Sys: your 1801's, Jolida 302b amp, yamahamer CD player, Thorens turntable, some kind of paragon or somesuch phono pre, and a Denon FM tuner - and some ears that aren't young. Wires are abomination: zip cord.

I went shopping for wood and a nice old man was pretty proud of his self milled walnut board even though I knew it would split on me. But I thought hey, it is glued in place won't go anywhere and it made him happy I bought it - I even put in a butterfly patch but not too visible in lousy photo I took - and I need to fill the crack with darkness:

I think that's a darn fine looking piece of lumber. It has character, and looks very sharp IMO.

Jim, I like it too. The figuring on mine are similar. I like the hard edges... it fits well with the wood and along with the crack gives it a cool rustic appearance. I'd display it proud in my home.

Well, finally done my 1801b's - first fine furniture project and overall pretty happy with the results. Learned a lot and would do several things differently on a second project! but very appreciative of the help I got from Dave. If anything I should have consulted on a couple of other issues but all the help and advice I got from queries to Dave were top notch! I'm still fiddling with positioning the speakers but right from the beginning the sound was really wonderful. It also didn't take long to confirm what others have said about source material - these speakers are pretty ruthless about revealing all the deficiencies in any recording but when you get a good recording - oh my, the sound is heavenly.

Very nice looking work!

I believe Walnut is my favorite. It has a very rich and classy appearance. Cherry is nice too, but the lumber is quite soft and easy to dent.
