Hi. All, first post here. I installed a dB app on my phone to use when I go to local concerts. Mainly unjust to amuse myself. I was wondering how the app compares to a "real" dB meter. Has anyone compared the two side by side? Are the real ones validated/calibrated?

I don't know but you can calibrate them to a real one. They all have a + and - adjustment feature.

I don't have an Apple but if you download a free one, don't use it while it's connected to the internet so you don't have to see the ads on the screen while using it.

Many people have this app mania. they no longer have a sense of reality, a while ago a lady asked me for an app to interfere with the boombox of the neighbor that bothered her:
-My lady, this is a problem for your husband.
She was mad.

The phone apps are notoriously inaccurate. If yours can be calibrated, it will be better. It still might not be accurate, because of the frequency response of the microphone.

Welcome!  The above post is how I use the RTA and SPL meter on my phone.  The Dayton Audio mic is quite inexpensive.  I have their USB mic as well for use with the PC and REW.
