He started hanging out with Jerry Garcia who introduced him to an assortment of drugs. Peter was a fragile person and flipped out under the stress. He disappeared from the music seen for decades. When he came back he was a shadow of his former self. The only music tragedy I can think of that was worse was Jaco Pastorious.
