The CDWG in an undamped room
« on: 10 Nov 2007, 09:08 pm »
In the past month I have installed both the RM 30 and the RM40 in medium sized rooms that were almost completely bare of absorption, particularly at the speaker end.  In one case there was a fireplace between the speakers, in the other an enormous wooden entertainment center with widescreen TV between the speakers.  All this with bare walls and hardwood floors.  Recipe for disaster, one would think.

Both setups involved good but not stellar associated gear and included Slimserver and other hard-drive based sources.  There were several power amps available of the "pro audio" genre.  Both areas were the main living rooms of the houses in question and in one case there was no centered listening position available.  Indeed with the 30's the listening positions were on opposing side walls directly in line with the left or right speaker.

After some experimenting I used one CDWG on the RM 40's and one off, but used both CDWG's on the RM30's.  This gave the best combination of smoothness, wide dispersion, and soundstaging.

Both setups worked very well.  The RM30's, installed on a short wall, produced truly amazing sound with depth, imaging and dynamics galore.
The RM40's placed on the long wall did almost equally well.

it would appear that the uniform 180 degree dispersion provided by the CDWG overcame any confusion from early reflections and other late arrivals to produce music that was both accurate and extraordinarily pleasant to hear.

Audiophiles who can't do room treatments behind or beside the speakers should take note: constant speaker directivity is a great blessing in a highly reflective environment.
