Cartridge for Thorens TD 2001
« on: 15 Mar 2003, 04:13 pm »
Hi,

On my Thorens TD2001 with TP90 tonearm (app. 17 grams) I now use a Stanton
881S and an Ortofon X1-MC, but I am looking for another cartridge.
The Stanton is IMO sloppy on the bass and grainy in the highs and with a
compliance of 30 and a
weight of 5.7g it tracks real bad in this midweight tonearm. The Ortofon
tracks very well, has good bass, but lacks upper mids and highs. The preamp has an MM and MC Phono stage.
I have been doing some research and have narrowed down the choice to
four cartridges.
1. Goldring Eroica LX (app. 177$)
2. Goldring 1042 (app. 200$)
3. Ortofon MC25E or FL (app. 240$)
4. Benz Micro MC Gold (app. 220$)

My question is: how do these cartridges generally sound, in terms of bass,
mids and highs? Or in terms of musicality, e.g. for pop, classic, jazz? Or warm, analytical, neutral?

Frank,

Always wondered how that TD2001 sounded - had it awhile have you?

I have a modded (Vampire output jacks, tonearm wrap, lots of mortite inside)  TD316 with TP11 arm and use the Shure V15 (latest design) with it.  Mostly happy - have changed to a tube phono and lost alot of dynamics, tho.  Should improve if I go back to solid state.

Put the Shure on the shortlist, tho it's a bit more $ than the others mentioned/listed.

Mr. Chair-man,

I have had the TD2001 for 5 years now, and I am a sort of ambivalent as far as the quality of this TT.
Although the build quality is fairly good, it is a model produced in the afterdays of the original company and that shows.
As for the sound, well, it is a lot better than the 316, which I also owned.
More quiet, better suspension, better platter, fairly good tonearm.
The reason I am looking for another cartridge is that after 5 years, I am not quite happy anymore with the sound.

I will put the Shure on the shortlist.

Thanks,
