Fun With Biases
« on: 6 Jun 2016, 06:52 pm »
Since the big audio pain-in-the-butt  (especially cables) is the use of biases to form a reason why we can't hear anything properly. I thought it would be fun to scope out some biases. (Seen this on FB)

What bias forms this attitude?

"I did good at the casino last night so I am going back tonight and feeling lucky".

A similar effect is cognitive dissonance, which is where you hold two opposing views in your mind at the same time and choose the one you "like".

I'll give you an example:

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Dietary Intervention Trial, where they took 49,000 women and split them into two groups, a group under test and a control group. The group under test was actively counseled to reduce the fat content of their diet, to eat more fruits and vegetables, etc.  What did they do?  They ate less overall fat, less saturated fat, more fruits and vegetables, less red meat, fewer calories, etc., than the control group.  The result after 8 years and 400+ MILLION dollars?  Nothing.  No benefit for cancer, heart disease, weight, nothing.

The reporting on this from the "experts" was basically "Our recommendations aren't changing."  What?  The low fat diet was a complete failure.  You should at least look to possibly allow more fat in the diet, but they can't bring themselves to do this.

Cognitive Dissonance is not a bias. It is a form a stress and a psychological condition.

But thanks for answering.  :thumb:

I know, but it is a bias. The example isn't mine but taking from the description with only a some minor alterations.

My spinster neighbor downstairs is addicted in prazepina(unknown the US name) by her psychiatric.
When she takes (almost always) this pump she behaves like Ms.Piggy Muppet beaten Kermit.
When she is without the remedy it behaves as a no self esteem kitty.

I think you're demonstrating confirmation bias.

No it's the Curse of Knowledge bias. It was first observed in economics and used to try and explain why people with little or no Knowlege of something can sell equally or better than someone with a high knowledge of something.

That is the kind of stuff big business considers and studies in psychology and economics.

My favorite is the Dunning Kruger effect.  The stupider you are, the more you think you are right, because you do not have the brains to realistically judge your actions.  The smarter you are, the more you might doubt your correctness.   More details on Wiki.  This concept really explains a lot of things.

Ok here is another bias. Try to guess what bias this is.

I recently changed out my signal cables. The cables I just bought sound better in the treble region.
