HI

The F just has Female XLR outputs and the other one has Male XLR outputs.

No the price went up a while ago - does not matter which version you buy.

Most headphones come with Male connectors so 99% of all BHA-1's we sell are Female XLR's on the BHA.  In the Pro market the reverse is true because signal always flows from a Male to a Female.

Hi

No - we found there was no advantage to the external power supply and the resale capability for the customer was highly impeded.

^ Curious as to the BP-26 preamp, which does have an ext PS. And HP jack. Since BHA-1 can also be used as a line preamp, why would BP26 need an ext PS and not BHA-1? Is the PS of BHA-1 better quality (quieter)?

Hi

The original idea with the external power supply for the BP26 was to offer a power supply that would allow 4 Bryston products to also be connected so it is about 4 times larger in power output capability. That concept never played out as planned but customers seemed to like the cosmetics and styling better so the preamp sold much better after we made that change.

Female XLR outputs? That's just not right.
What happens if someone plugs a microphone into the output?

Hi

Not sure I understand - all Balanced headphones we have seen require a Balanced  female connector on the input as the headphone has a Balanced male plug on the connection cord and when we offered the Balanced Male we were told it will never sell that way - and they were correct.

Sorry I don't have any XLR headphones.  But in pro-audio the standard is outputs > male with inputs  > female.
It would blow a microphone if it got plugged into a head-phone output.
Put a warning label on those outputs.

Hi

We have a Pro version and it uses the Male.

Wait a second, those are 4 pin connectors aren't they??
All pro-equipment interconnects are 3 pin.

The BHA1 has both a single XLR4(f) and a pair of XLR3(f) on the front.

These days, balanced headphones have more or less standardized on XLR4(m) for their plugs. When balanced headphones were still a new thing however, the amps were essentially just bridged monoblocks and each monoblock used a combo TRS/XLR3(f) jack. Thus the dual xlr3(m) was the standard on headphones for a little while before xlr4(m) caught on.
