I'm losing my mind Kepler & EX-6.5 Sale!

Ok... these are officially going on closeout.    The Kepler never sold well enough to make it a keeper and I have excess stock of the EX-6.5.

These are fantastic drivers when used properly.    Look at the review on the Kepler and compare the distortion numbers with the popular Usher/SS models.     They are an excellent performer and they won praise from SoundStage (an Editor's Choice) due to their performance.

http://www.soundstage.com/diwhy/diwhy200804.htm

This obviously changes the equation on my Kepler speaker prices also.    I will no longer be selling the Kepler kit because it just doesn't make economic sense.   I'd be happy to share the crossover network and sell the PCBs until I'm out of stock.    I have about 10 sets of crossover boards left and various crossover parts.     For anyone interested, email me.    Boards would be about $5 each and I'll have to check my stock of crossover parts.   I've let most of them dwindle in anticipation of this move.

The Peerless tweeter is available at Madisound.

http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1744

I'll post the BOM for the crossovers for download along with links to all the Parts Express equivalents.  The network is about $45 retail for all the parts.

Should be able to build the Kepler with these prices for around $150ea.

$35   EX-6.5 Midwoofer
$78   Peerless Tweeter
$45   Network
---------------------
$148

Available for a limited time.   Once I'm out of stock of the EX-6.5 they are gone for good.    They are a product that just didn't pull their weight when it came to the business side of things but they represent an excellent speaker design.

Thanks!    I fixed it above.    I should have tested them but I'm busy building a couple things.   (I multitask).

Birthday was good, I went to my son's first football game and watched him warm the bench.     The kids get much more excited about it than I do.   For them, it is cake and presents and they get pretty excited about any birthday opportunity.

Kevin has finally  :bomb:

$300/pair + wood for an excellent monitor that just well...competes with many stand alone conventional monopole 2 way moderate to low efficiency monitors that is nearly full range, at anything retail under $4K. Phew! Talk about a run on sentence.

I can say this, it will at least, hold its own, if not beat a bunch of them out there given the parameters described  :thumb:

Anand.

Ok... here is the crossover list.   I don't have time to answer everyone who wants an answer tonight.    I have to run and pick up my son in another 45 minutes so here is the quick and dirty:

Tweeter Network:    Qty 1 on of each.

Capacitor 3.9uF 250V                 Erse  $2.65

http://www.diycable.com/main/product_info.php?cPath=35_145&products_id=635

Inductor 1.5mH 20AWG               $7.15ea   PE Part# 255-052

Inductor 0.35mH 20AWG             $3.79ea    PE Part# 255-030

Resistor 10W 22 Ohm

Resistor 10W 18 Ohm

Capacitor 0.33uF 630V           Erse  0.33uF 630V       $4.15

Woofer Network:

1.5mH  15AWG       PE Part # 255-106     $10.04

0.47mH  18AWG       PE Part #  255-228  $5.35

Capacitor  20uF 250V    Erse  $7.48

http://www.diycable.com/main/product_info.php?cPath=35_145&products_id=646

Capacitor 30uF 250V      Erse  $10.50

http://www.diycable.com/main/product_info.php?cPath=35_145&products_id=649

The resistors can be any 10W sandcast version that either PE or Madisound stocks.   I stock and use the Lynx because they hold tigher tolerances.   I have all these values in stock but not on my web site.   If you want me to throw them in figure $1 per resistor.    You can substitute other high-quality MKP caps for the Erse but I voiced and designed these with the Erse parts.    I have stock on all the caps.

I'll update this stuff a little more tomorrow.  I'll need to get a JPG of the schematic for people.    The kits never included the full schematic because the crossovers where assembled.    I'll have to update this.

I'll get all the information published but you won't get a lot of hand-holding on this project.   I'm obviously giving away the drivers in order to get rid of excess product.   I don't have time to answer endless build emails.   I'd be more than happy to help with any obvious problems but I won't spend hours answering endless emails.   I just don't have the time or margin built into these to do that sort of thing.    I will give you all the information you need on the forum to build them.    It is up to you to figure out the network and actually build it.

I don't particularly care to see anyone lose their grip, but I'm not above taking advantage of the situation.  A pair of the EX-6.5 at that price is too tempting to resist.

Ok... I'm going to create an item on my web site for people to order a package of crossover parts.    It will include the capacitors, resistors and an inductor or two.      You will need to go buy the other inductors and misc parts from Parts Express or another vendor.    There is no way I can individually talk with everyone requesting various parts and pieces.    I just don't have the time to deal with the flood of request.

Check back in a couple hours and I'll have something on the site to order these.    First come first serve as I don't have as many crossover parts as I do woofers.

Alright.... this is all done.

I am already sold out of the crossover PCBs.    Sorry... but I didn't have many and they went within the first five minutes of posting.

Here is the web page for the PARTIAL kit components.   It includes updated documentation that shows the network and the bill of materials including Part Numbers from Parts Express for those parts not included in the crossover kit.

Note... this does not include the drivers.   You have to add those to your shopping cart separately.    The Peerless tweeter has to be bought through Madisound.

Ok.... I retracted my offer to mill the baffles.   But since I don't want to totally bail on my word, here is my offer.

I'll do a single run of baffles.   It takes time to setup, and tear down and ship all these parts so the only way this makes sense is if I take an afternoon and run a mini production run of baffles.    I'll set a date, sometime next month where I'll do a run of baffles for those who want them cut.     Send me an email if your interested.    It will cost $15/baffle ($30/pr) and it will require that you supply the baffle, with a return address and a payment via check, money order etc.... sent with your baffle.    Lets set the return shipping at $5ea for anywhere in the USA just to keep it simple.    You would send $20 per baffle and I'll cut them on my CNC mill.

After I do the mini-run, your own your own in terms of cutting the baffle.

Everyone should check their drivers when they receive them.    I have a nearly 100% record with Q/C on these.   There have been no problems but that doesn't mean that a gremlin couldn't sneak into play or a shipping snafu might cause an issue.

Reason being is that I won't have inventory to replace them 6-months down the road.   They are on close-out and once they are gone, they are gone for good.

Ok.... that was quick.   These are officially out of stock.    I still have crossover components (including some inductors) for anyone who needs the crossover parts.

so will the EX6.5 still be available as a raw driver?

Nope.... they are gone.   Not enough movement on them to make economic sense.

Need some custom stand mounted cabinets for your recently acquired Kepler speakers?  I have some Cherry & Maple boxes that will be cut & routed for flush mounting, ready to drop in your new drivers.  $400 shipped in the lower 48.

I also have 2 complete sets of drivers & crossovers that Kevin built on PC boards that I will sell fully assembled for $800 shipped.  Not interested in parting them out.

Thanks, Fritz Heiler

PS- Cabinets for other kits also available.

Hi Kevin,

I received my Ex-6.5s. Many thanks. Could I ask two questions?

I've looked at the documentation and can't see the size and length of the ports. Also do the Keplers have any stuffing etc in the boxes.

Cheers,

Anthony
