First: I wouldn't destroy a vintage speaker like that.
Second: It probably wouldn't be hard to swap a driver, but you need a driver that would physically fit as well as have enough airspace.
Third: Not sure if the box would need extra work to make it useable.
Forth: It probably could "work", but it would be more a novelty item. A half-way decent powered subwoofer would be a better option.
