Introduction 2
« on: 7 Mar 2023, 03:56 pm »
Hi Everybody,
I am new to the forums. I have had my world turn upside down when I recently found out about the history of phenolic ring tweeters. I have them on a pair of speakers at home and I love how they sound. Does anyone else feel the same way? Is there a newer technology tweeter that sounds like them?
The only way I can explain their sound is "holographic". I feel like I am hearing the artist perform in the room. Sound stage is wide and detailed.

Do you know when speaker manufacturers stopped using them? I feel like younger people have missed out and need to hear them again.

Dave

After a fast google found that phenolic ring tweeters was popular in the 1970s in mid-fi speakers, usually paper cone, were made by some manufacturers as CTS and Pioneer and were low priced items used by JBL, Marantz, Altec, Ohm, etc the phenolic ring was just a spacer.

If you want a quality paper cone treble driver see Alpair 12P or Alpair10 aluminium cone.

Hi,
The Starting Block Circle is really for people to introduce themselves.
This question/thread is best posted in the Enclosure Circle, so I will move it there for you now.

Polk had been using a ring tweeter in their top line 700 series for a number of years now.  I don't keep up with them enough to know if they still use that design, but it was lovely.  Smooth yet detailed, I thought it was the best part of that line of speakers.
