I love the look and scale of this design.  It just looks right.  It's a shame Brian didn't do a Neo panel version!  That would have been sweet.   :D

Hello Stimpy, I was wondering if you know where I could find the mid driver in a WCF. Like the ones your referencing.
I have both types of 12" WCF single and double stack magnets but seemed to have misplaced the mids.
I need to do an upgrade for the new amps, the old 12" drivers, just aren't up to the task, when I volume UP too much.
I don't want to tear them up either. Still sound really good with valve amps.
I'm pretty sure it took a different PR too. Would you know of any?

2 mids (gotta check ohm)
2 PRs

I'm not sure if they are 4 or 8 ohm, I'll check. I remember both models, WCF and the originals were a GOOD driver, NEVER
had a problem with either. Just the 12" WCF were difficult to drive with 40 wpc valve amps. It's the only weak point of the old
boxes "The Mids", Sure is a great comco though.

I haven't tore into the TIIse yet. Want to do it all at once, XO repair/rebuild, the ribbon tweet was blown, driver swap, add a
little bracing, and a second application of sound coat. The wiring/toggle and pots are all old. I'm sure they all need a good cleaning etc. I've been on a "replace the old wire", tangent here lately, breaking in my new Weller. I have to look at the Quasi wiring you spoke of, also.

I suppose the current mids could stay, just have to run a little hotter than I like.

Thanks OldHvyMec

The only one I know, that might have any mid woofers, would be Pat Malaga.  Pat bought out the VMPS warehouse, after Brian passed.  He advertises on Craigslist.  He usually has various drivers and cabinets for sale.  Pat is in CA, around San Francisco.

Woofers

Cabinets

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ele/d/pinole-brand-new-vmps-speaker-cabinets/6795123927.html

If Pat doesn't have anything, you could try Misco.  They made Brian's WCF woofers.  Misco wouldn't have the exact drivers, but they probably would have something close.

One other possibility is Parts Express.  Brian used them for certain woofers.  Usually, Goldwood Heavy Duty woofers, in his subs.  But, Goldwood makes different sizes, in 4 and 8 Ohm.  As a last resort, I'd measure the impedance of your woofer, and match it to a Goldwood.

Good luck!

PRICE DROP  -  $4500

VMPS Super Tower III Special Ribbon Edition -  (Roswell, GA)  $5500

"This is an improved (with the help of the late Brian Cheney) version of the $19,900 VMPS Super Tower III SRE (Special Ribbon Edition) speakers. The problem of limited vertical dispersion of the ribbon tweeters in the original version was addressed, per Mr. Cheney's suggestion, by adding a second tweeter. Later top of the line VMPS models addressed this problem by making the ribbon tweeter aimable. These speakers require three stereo amps and a three way electronic crossover. The amps are not included but a preconfigured Behringer DCX2496 crossover/DSP unit is, as well as a passive blocking unit using Auricap blocking caps to protect and properly load the ribbon tweeters. If you bring your amplifiers I can use my PC based measurement system and measuring microphone to dial in the DCX2496 for your equipment.

I have been in the high end audio business for over forty years and these truly unique speakers compare favorably to speakers costing ten to twenty times more. I know that is an outlandish statement, but serious buyers are welcome to audition and decide for themselves. Local pickup only with your crew. Each speaker weighs approximately 325 pounds."

VMPS RM30  -  (Van Nuys, CA)  $2800

https://www.audiogon.com/listings/lis9b6ei-vmps-rm30-full-range?refsource=hifishark

"Here is a pair of VMPS RM30's in Macassar Ebony. Excellent condition and about 6 years old. There are the latest with two 6" forward firing woofers and a 10" side mounted passive radiator. The midrange drivers are Neopanels and the tweeter is a ribbon. All the drivers are still in production so replacement is not a problem, should the need arise. Great thing about these is that they can be placed close the the wall behind and not cause any issues. There are no obvious cosmetic flaws anywhere and they do sound great with solid state or tube amplification."

VMPS Larger Subwoofer Piano Black  -  (Columbia, MD)  $450

https://www.audiogon.com/listings/lis9ag29-vmps-larger-subwoofer-piano-black-subwoofers?refsource=hifishark

"Original owner - purchased in 2002/2003 timeframe.  This sub functions perfectly and looks fantastic, as shown in the pictures. It has one scratch on the left side of the cabinet face, that is mostly covered by the grille.  I think it would be very easy to fix this with a small amount of wood putty and a bit of black paint or a black Sharpie and would then not be noticeable.
It was used in a dedicated home theater environment.  It comes from a climate-controlled, smoke-free and pet-free home and was never physically handled outside of setup and removal from the home theater.
The original grille is included and it is in excellent condition, too.

Local pickup only; box not included.
Note: I recognize I have not sold or purchased much on Audiogon; however, I am on eBay as Scott_C7 with a 100% positive feedback. I’m interested in honest transactions where both buyer and seller walk away highly satisfied.  Please feel free to ask any questions you may have; I’ll be happy to provide you with any information I can."

VMPS Tower II, Special Edition Speakers  -  (Dublin / Pleasanton / Livermore, CA)  $975

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ele/d/pleasanton-vmps-tower-ii-special/6804881998.html

"These VMPS speakers sound absolutely fantastic! Bring your favorite record and listen for yourself!

No surprise with this set-up:
1" Ribbon super-tweeter,
1" Focal dome tweeter,
5" Carbon fiber midrange,
12" Mid-woofer
12" Woofer
12" Passive Radiator

45"x15"16", 105lbs each

Price when new was $1875 for the pair
Excellent condition

Of course it depends on the equipment you connect: I was lucky to try them with an assortment of solid-state amps (Pioneer Spec-2, Aragon 8008 and Burson Audio TK-100) and also a few vintage tube amps (Eico ST70, Sherwood 5000 II, and Dynaco Mark III) The solid states unfold with crispness and clearity and tube amps seem to harmonize well with the analytic capabilities of these VMPS towers.

I compared them to Klipsch La Scala, KEF 104.2, Fried R/4, Yamaha and IMF transmission line speakers. They clearly describe a richer soundstage and open up more bass. Brian Cheney, the gentleman who designed them, was a true genius. These speakers turned me into a VMPS fan for life!"

You know Stimpy, I looked, the only thing close was at Parts Express. They did have one called "Epique" a
5 1/4 WCF with all the the goodies. 299.00 and discontinued. WOW.  I'm gonna try a 2 1/8 SD mid from Dayton.
It has something I could never find in a dome, 8 ohm. I've always liked the way a single mid dome style
speakers worked. I just have to try it and see. The cut off via spec sheet is good from 300hz with only a -2 db.
I think the TIIses are 350htz, VERY high cut off for the midbass. If it works, like other dome speaker systems,
I've heard. It should be a nice upgrade, and not just a sound change. It should add greater mid
dispersion (convex) and GREATER clarity, (less moving mass), via soft dome. The bass, well it's the Boom
Boom Brian special, ay.

The TIIse in the Livermore add,  have a driver combo, that I've never heard either, phase plugs but non WCF,
12s and WCF mid, interesting.I bet they are VERY fast and LESS distortion than my older NON phase plug
design (first series of drivers pre WCF era)

I have both 12" drivers, The mid/bass coupler, and sub/bass in WCF. I'm looking for a high excursion
passive radiators, but, with as light a moving mass (including spider asy) as I can find. So far they
are all TOO HD. I can see why Brian had to have stuff made. UHHHH!!
Makes it hard to FINE tune with "putty pinching".  We'll see.

It's not easy trying to keep vintage speakers up and running.  Especially when the speakers were fairly rare, even new.  I'll keep looking too, to see if I can find any other possibilities?

Now, maybe this will help with the passive radiators.  Creative Sound Solutions is making their 10 and 12" passives again.  They were being used as upgrades for VMPS.  Give 'em a look.
