Randall Museum tube DIY class
« on: 7 Oct 2007, 07:37 pm »
I went down to register for the tube audio class this past week and was informed it was cancelled due to lack of registration.
They would be willing to offer another class for the winter schedule, starting in January.
The bottom line is we need SEVEN people to register.
That is the minimum they will hold a class for.
I want to believe this is possible. I think as long as I am dreaming I should also request a design.
Any thoughts on a tweakable DIY preamp?
Also you do not need to be a SF resident to participate, the registration form is not really clear on this issue.

Here is the link to the current flyer (thanks wired becker)

We have a couple of months lead time, so lets beat the brush!

Berndt,

Once again, I missed it too.

I would love to do this class.  Let's see if we can get the crew together in advance.

To that end, do you know about BurningAmp happening on the 20th?  We may want to post on their thread to see if we can drum up some interest or go there in person.  I was planning to go it but have a work conflict. Very disappointing. :-)

There are now two of us.  Only 5 more to go!  Do you know of any others off hand?

As for a design, I have on my list (long, of course) a "digital preamp" that selects amongst multiple digital inputs for D/A conversion that feeds into a line stage with volume and balance control.  Also feeding the line stage would be a few analog inputs.  Lots of folks may want a phone stage though.  Seems like we could request something with enough flexibility down the road to be interesting to all.  FWIW, I'm running a fixed output stage with 6N1P tubes that sounds really nice.

I talked to the director of the Randall.
He said the linestage is based on a simple circuit and utilizes a little known microphone tube.
I also found another person who is willing to commit so that makes four!
There was also a person preregistered that didn't get to take the class, maybe that would be five?
I will be getting more details regarding the design emailed to me, I will let you know as soon as I get them.
There is also a posibility of getting a turntable class, that would be fun to do a homebuilt tt.

I'm in SF and interested too - is the cost $350 plus $170?
Thanks,
Mike

yes, the registartion fee would be the 170$ then their would be a material fee paid to the instructor when the class met.
I have myself and one more person that doesn't post here that wants to take this class.
Minimum is 7 registered persons to have the class go off.

If we get 7 people we could pretty much set our own date.
Otherwise I believe the class will be placed on the calendar again in the spring and we see if we can get the 7 then.

Here is the reply I received.
Please note you should get a family acct going asap to facilitate registration.

Hi Bill,

I have forwarded your email to our director to verify the class will be offered again in the Winter.  Assuming it is (and I'll get back to you once he's confirmed that), you can register for the class online with a credit card at sfreconline.org.  I believe our registration starts at the end of this month for winter, and classes begin the week of January 8th.  The folks you have found to participate will all need to have family accounts created with us, and they should start that process ASAP.  They can download the form from our
website: www.randallmuseum.org and mail it with the necessary documentation to my attention, and I'll process them as soon as I get them.  At that point they, too, will be able to register for the class online.

I hope this information is helpful.

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to let you know that we are currently in the midst of our registration process for Winter and that we are again offering the Tube Audio DIY class.  Please remind the folks you have in mind for the class to register ASAP so that the class will run.  Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up, Berndt.

I registered yesterday and a friend of mine brings the total to 4 with 7 required (which you already know, I think).  There are two other guys that have said yes but they have yet to register. Fingers crossed.

Did anyone send information to the Burning Amp crew? Did it get mentioned there?

I'm just trying to think of places where we could get one more.

I have no posting history on DIY's websight, but I'll give it a go.
Thanks for registering, BTW!
