There are several good programs for helping design speaker boxes. If you find some that I have left off, please post and add them.
Basic info: http://www.diyaudioandvideo.com/FAQ/Build/
Box Calculators

The Lalena.com site also has basic crossover info and notch filter info.
This site at Madisound looks interesting, but I haven't explored it completely. http://www.madisound.com/services/hifispeakerdesign.php

Here's a box calculator that you can download (the demo version is usually adequate):
http://www.ggimages.com/spsim/index.html
All you need to input is Fs, Qts, Vas, and Qes.
I'm suspicious of the results the vent calculator gives you for multiple vents, but otherwise I think it works well.

edit 12-27-10: That link no longer works; I've been unable to re-locate this speaker simulator on the 'net.

SPEAK at Gedlee.com is free now. Not very friendly for a beginner but if you are patient enough can work it out.
