If you were a regular Monday nights at the village vanguard you saw him playing valve trombone in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big band (How did they all fit on that tiny stage?!) As a on musician, composer, and arranger he leaves a lasting presence.

I think his best release is Blues Hot & Cold/7 X Wilder, which can be sampled here.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Personally, I have never warmed up to the trombone as lead instrument. I find it good in a band as long as I don't hear too much of it. But do I find his work with Jimmy Giuffre fabulous. For me, that is where I really enjoyed his talent. I'll be spinning those today in his honor.
