If you were to build a pair of Song 3A with a rear port instead of a front port what changes would you have to make?

It is optional. You decide when you order.

Mine are rear ported. I placed them 3ft from the rear wall. Imaging is superb.

I you need them close to the wall then the front port allows that.

As indicated above, you have a choice.  It is not an issue either way.
