I just think of it as a math equation version of the passive crossovers. It can do a lot more than that as well.
This is an analog and digital preamp with input switching, DSP crossover, DAC's and room correction capability in one unit. Just lets you multi-amp your speakers like in studio monitors and use the amps you want for each pair of drivers.
This eliminates the passive crossover components to let the drivers be in the feedback loop of the amp. This is the reason that I believe that people like single driver speakers as the driver is connected directly to the amp.
