I've only used Aquasana, so I can't recommend another. I did shop around before buying the AS filter though. There are inexpensive alternatives available locally, like at Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, etc.
Wish the AS was cheaper & smaller in size, but other than those 2 issues its nice to shower in clean water. The area I recently moved too has nasty water & old underground municipal water supplies.
