I am a music lover and thinking of building my own speakers. I would consider myself a beginner wood worker and somewhat concerned getting the build done correctly. Any advice would be appreciated..

Of course you can do it if you persist, but your three statements seem to point away from DIY speakers.
When the project is finally complete, DIY always costs more than buying equivalent commercial speakers. Even if you pay yourself like dirt. We do it for the fun. We like building things just as much as listening to music. It is a separate but complementary hobby to listening. The learning is fun, and the problem solving. It takes a long time to learn enough where the whole project is fun all the way through. But with learning new skills you can do bigger projects, and apply the skills to other tasks in life.
DIY can potentially perform better than commercial speakers, and that's why DIY costs more, because you use better parts. But this all depends on the design and engineering skill, which is limited in the beginner. So a kit is valuable to ensure success on the first few projects.
So if listening is your primary interest, I would recommend buying gently pre-owned speakers.
