SMPS180 vs SMPS400A180?
« on: 20 Jul 2013, 06:00 pm »
What's the difference between these power supplies for UCD180:

SMPS180:
- Output power: 300W
- Output power: 180W @20Hz
- Price: 130,50€

 SMPS400A180:
- Max. Output power: 600W
- Max. Output power: 400W @20Hz
- Price: 81,50€

I mean; why would anyone pay twice the price to get only the half of the output power??

The SMPS180 has a Power Factor Correction circuit that the SMPS400A180 does not have, also the SMPS180 has adjustable output of 2 X 35VDC to 45VDC, whereas the SMSS400A180 has fixed 2 X 46VDC output.

Not sure why you might want to use it though, or what improvement the PFC might give.  My impression is that the SMPS180 came out first and was later followed by the SMPS400A180 and SMPS400A400 supplies that were specifically matched to the UcD180 and UcD400 amplifier modules.

Steve is right. In addition to what he said, Hypex is just waiting for the stock on the SMPS180 to dwindle down before having only the SMPS400A180 remaining as the defacto choice. In addition they have advised sticking with the switching supplies as they sound just as good if not better than their linear supplies.

Best,

Anand.
