Noob with Old Speakers
« on: 13 Aug 2022, 09:50 pm »
Hello All,

I'm going to make an assumption that more than a few of the more experienced folks here have older, "vintage" speakers, i.e., AR's, Advents (OLA & NLA, 5012W's) KLH (Model 5's, 6's and 17's), Dynaco's etc.
Henry Kloss did say his favorite speaker was the KLH 6, or so I've heard. (Yes, it could be an advertising stroke of near genius).
I'm wondering if Danny has done any measurements and crossover upgrades on the older classics. I've seen rebuilt crossovers on Ebay, but not sure about the quality of parts. Pretty sure I see cheese here and there.
I think it would be very interesting to see a series of videos with the classic speakers from the late 60's thru early 80's.
Since the current troubles started, there has been a great increase in the old vintage gear and this is the place to get the most out of those classic speakers.
I hope I'm not repeating the thoughts of an earlier post and apologize if that's the case. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Thanks,

Nathanial G.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

Hi,
As you already introduced yourself last month I will move this topic to the GR Research Circle.

I'll throw my hat in the ring with my JBL 4310's. Definitely interested in a xover upgrade on those...either a full redesign or just upgraded parts. The thing is you need to send a speaker to Danny and these behemoths aren't cheap to pack and ship.

The other issue is the drivers on old speakers often need work, so a crossover based on one may not be right on another. Ex. The surrounds degrade a lot, some of the motor magnets can degauss, etc.

I would suggest making sure the speaker is otherwise up to par before sending it. A good method is to just search for the model number number and 'repair' or 'refurbishing' online as there are specialists for many of the better brands who will call out the common work needed.

The JBL 4310/L100 drivers have been measured by two respected designers who have come up with two different crossover designs. The 4310 and L100 may have different tweeters depending when they were bought. I bought the L100 new in 1972 and it has the LE20-1 tweeter. At one time I considered changing the crossovers on my L100s but decided I like them just the way they are.

I've worked on quite a few vintage models, but none of those listed.

I'm three states to the left of Texas, so there's that, but I'd love to see a NLA Bullnose up there on the table and Danny going to town on it.
