Passive Pre with Remote: In search of.
« on: 2 Jan 2023, 06:38 pm »
I'm tired of getting up to turn the volume up or down in my home theater setup. I am on the lookout for a C&C preamp with remote. Doesn't have to be passive, actually.

Try the pro-ject Pre box S2 Analog.  Great sounding unit but with limited inputs.  The switching ps can be replaced by any 5v battery powerbank as an added bonus.

Look for a Tortuga - remote volume and balance - passive - excellent sound quality.  No longer being made so look for a nice used one.

I second the Tortuga, it's the only piece of gear in my system I haven't changed - or had any interest in changing - in the past 8 years.

Got a Schiit Saga+ ($399) plus on the way. Passive and active, resistor relay volume, remote and the price is pretty darned good. Even cheaper for the solid state version ($299).

If you want ultra cheap you can go for a PGA2310-based preamp (~$70-100+), which I also have on the way:

I've had one in the past and I thought it was great.

Only one recommendation here is actually C&C, the others aren't crazy, just pushing pricing guidelines pretty hard.  What are used Tartugas going for?

Frank Van Alstine has a nice one. 4 inputs, 2 line outputs, volume and selector switch (also built in headphone amp for private listening). The highest quality. https://avahifi.com/collections/preamplifiers/products/transcendence-10-rb-preamplifier

I have 4 AVA preamps. Can't go wrong.

I'm seeing $6-700+ USD.

If used is ok I would suggest looking for an Audio Alchemy DLC with Power Station 2 or 3

https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/649932302-khozmo-dual-mono-passive-preampvolume-control-with-remote-and-display/

That ad led me down a rabbit hole on the Khozmo website. They've really upped their game the past few years.
So many great options for gear right now.

afaik it's the same potentiometer since they came out more than a decade ago just more features.  i got one when they first came out and found it very transparent.

A used Saga (+ or original) would be my choice for the $ for this approach.

Staying with Schiit, you can get a B Stock 115v Freya S in black or silver for $499.  Passive or active.  Balanced. 5 yr warranty.  Relay switched volume.  I wish I needed one.
