Question about av123 X-Voce finish
« on: 2 May 2020, 03:20 pm »
Hi Guys,

So I bought one of the finished X-Voce's from Danny and I'm going to build a pair of X-Statiks. I really like the finish on the X-Voce, I'm wondering if its possible to try to match the finish somewhat. I know it will be impossible to get them perfect but I'm just looking for ballpark. I'm having a hard time finding a veneer that would match up.

I need help understanding the finishes from the av123 box. Anyone know what Moho is or Rosa?

I could be wrong but I believe since they were built in Colombia the veneers came from there as well.

In addition I suspect the wood "names" were sort of invented for marketing purposes. Moho alludes to some kind of mahogany, Rosa maybe rosewood. FWIW, Diamond is glossy, satin is, well, satiny.

Ultimately, the best I imagine you could hope for would be "close". Contrast is almost always easier to achieve than a match. To me, a point worth considering.

Thanks guys, I'm wonder if it's some type of South American mahogany. Even though it's a veneer coverage in stain/clear it smells like mahogany.

I'll create a build thread and let you know which I go with!

I was just trying to remember this the other day when talking to Danny about the finished speakers he has left. If memory serves, the original “Moho” finish was something that had thick stripes of very dark and very light grain randomly dispersed. The “Rosa” version I believe was a similar or the same veneer but stained red. The end result that you have there looks like the contrast grain isn’t as stark and may be a little easier to match. I think if you took a rosewood with nice grain and dyed it to match, you may be able to get close. Something like this maybe:

That’s a beautiful speaker btw. Santiago and his team down in Cali did just amazing work. Too bad my wife is set on something darker or I’d have one of those on its way to me soon as well.

Have you set it up and listened to it yet?
