2 M-165X in a 1 cuft Sealed box
« on: 2 Aug 2008, 03:55 pm »
How low could you expect 2 M-165X's to go in a 1-1.2 cubic ft sealed enclosure?  They will be powered by a 100 watt (@8 ohms) plate amp, wired in series and only driven from 200 hz and down.  How would they compare to a single M-165X in a 1.2 cubic ft ported enclosure powered by the same amp?

Thanks,
Ed

My calculations show F3 about 65hz.
Did you mean parallel, you probably won't like them wired in series.  :(

Thanks OB,
Wiring them in parallel brings the impedence down to about 2.6 ohms worst case, my plate amp won't handle that.  What are the issues wiring them in parallel?

I just worked on a design using a pair of these in series. It worked just fine.

I used them in a sealed design. It doesn't increase output level over a single woofer but it does increase power handling by cutting the work load in half. So distortion will be lower. Bass will be tighten cleaner and a little more defined but with less extension. It can, in some cases, minimize room gains that you might get withe the lower playing ported version.

The single ported woofer has the advantage of getting you a lower -3db of 40Hz.

Thanks Danny.  How low does the pair in a sealed enclosure go?  Is 1 cuft better than 1.2?

Thanks,
Ed

Anechoically it is -3db down at 75.7Hz in 1.2 cubic feet and 76.5Hz 1 cubic feet. It will be lower in room. You can go either way on the size. The stuffing or amount of stuffing can make as much difference as the .2 cubic feet difference.

Thanks Dany.  If I understand you correctly since I am connecting them in series I won't get the 6dB boost even if they are located next to each other.

Question, if I am mounting these in a 30" tall tower does it make sense to mount one driver near the bottom of the cabinet close to the floor to get the additional gain and mount the other unit near the top close to the full range driver?

Thanks,
Ed

This is correct.

If it were me, I would keep driver spacing close to aid in integration.

This alignment worked out very well, thanks for the tips Danny.  I am still playing with the polyfil but it is sounding quite good right now.

Best,
Ed

Ed-

Did you continue with this any further? Very curious to hear what your thoughts are if you have.

Thanks,

Ben
