Why doesn't somebody build some? Or some planar magnetics? I see constant reference to how wonderful these are and how wonderful the large Maggies are and how wonderful Apogee's are, but I (and I'm sure others) can't afford new or used large Maggies or used Apogee's. Surely by now, someone somewhere has built one or both kinds. Anyone here know of any successful builds?

A friend of mine has a pair of ER Audio stats that he made. It doesn't seem all that hard. You still have to buy the kit.

Surely by now, someone somewhere has built one or both kinds. Anyone here know of any successful builds?
I've never built any planar magnetics or ribbons so I can't comment on those. But if everyone knew how easy it is to build a pair of flat-panel ESL's, there would probably be more folks here taking the plunge. One of the links (Jazzman's ESL Page) is my blog, which gives pretty comprehensive instructions, parts sources, etc... Hey yall, go for it!

Because of the metalwork and (typically) neodynium magnets, ribbons seem to be quite a project, there are some impressive examples on DIY audio.
Not sure about planars, I haven't seen very many DIY projects.

Hank, I've seen Tympani 1-D's go for as little as $200. A pair at that price will almost certainly have to be rebuilt, but it isn't hard or expensive to do so, particularly for the woofer -- the tweeter is push-pull and uses extremely fine wire, but you might be able to use foil instead.
It's a much easier project than building them from scratch, no baffle construction, Mylar tensioning, tuning dots (or Apogee-style trapezoidal cutout), etc.

My personal tastes have evolved to segmented, insulated wire stator ESL's these days, as they give a beautiful lobe-free dispersion pattern and they are practically immune to arcing. Below are a couple of others' designs; one a hybrid like mine and the other a full range:
