Back in the fold again
« on: 19 Oct 2022, 03:48 pm »
Just picked up a pair of Maggie 1.7’s.  In a big room (25x30), but seldom played over 85-90db.
I use a Technis SU-G700 integrated, which seems to  have enough power at 140w into 4 ohms,
But is not as warm in the mids as I like.   SS or tube recommendations?
Regards,
Hibuck…

For site sponsors AVA, Bryston and Odyssey are all good choices.
With my 1.7s I use old VTL tube monoblocks but that might be overkill for lower volume levels.

Youve probably read, but high current amps seem to be the best fit. My 1.7i s are powered by my 42 yr old Carver M400. 200 wpc into 8ohms about 300 wpc into 4 ohms. This little amp barely gets warm after a couple hours of high output, but yes Bryston, Odessy, Hegal seem to be the amps of choice for Maggies. Im due for amp upgrade and will be looking more into these brands. Check out Planar Circle best amps for Maggies (not exact title).

For me the best amp I tried with my 1.6QR's was a Crown XLS1500 pro amp.  Should be able to find a few locally for sale on Kijiji or other similar classifieds.

I don't own Maggies, so I don't know for sure about this idea, but...would a used IceEdge1200as2 amp be a good fit?

Hibuck... did you check Hegal vs Odessy for Maggies? I think its on page 2.
Anyone have Parasound/ Magnapan experience? The A21+, A23+ seem well rated and dont need to be on 24 /7 or wait for long warm up time.

Using this amp on a rebuilt pair of 1.5QRs. Never took these amps seriously until I heard this model. It's incredible with Maggies and a bargain.

FWIW, I don't like the new all QR Maggie models as they have lost the warmth of the older models. To be fair, I think they are quicker and more transparent but at the cost of losing that incredible Maggie warmth. To each his own i guess.
