Title: Kitchen Remodel
Post by: konut on 15 Nov 2019, 04:47 pm
Here's the reason I have for not getting to the review of the Tortuga preamp. It took a year to complete because my contractor is a one man show and he was going through a divorce. I stuck with him because he is an artisan and I am always pleased with the results. He has done all the work on my house since I inherited it, which includes complete renovation of the exterior and bathroom, and adding a rear deck.

I was a baker for 30 years and in essence it's a mini-bakery

FWIW, in my experience as a remodeling contractor, the times I treasure most are when a client and I worked together to tailor a space just for them. It's a unique fusion of vision and craftsmanship that's hard to beat and also hard to come by.

Sounds like this was  a similar thing for you. I love that it's so much in a relatively small space.

Kudos to you and your GC!

Very nice and custom made for your needs, but how does it sound? :P

A few more details. The house is less than 800 sq. ft. The 50 year old mixer and 40 year old range were stripped and painted to match. The house was built in '39. Every cabinet and cupboard were custom built to fit the non-standard dimensions. Counters are blue pearl granite. The floor is cork laminate with cork underlayment.

That is stunning, konut. The countertops are beautiful and I love the white tile with the blue tile accent. Love the trim and accent paint around the doors and window. Is that dark brown and teal? And I absolutely love the flooring.

The cork laminate and cork underlayment has to be comfortable. Would love to do that in our home. Could that be done on a concrete slab?

Again, it looks fantastic, enjoy.

Cheers,

Scott

Samac, you have a great eye for detail! The blue tile accent was a lucky find on the mark-down cart at Lowes and, as my neighbor says, makes the kitchen look less like a subway bathroom. The doorway trim is actually the existing wood. Had to sand off the old finish. My contractor picked out the stain. Kind of hard to see the grain, but it looks great! The blue trim, ceiling, and grout were all on the same Sherwin - Williams color strip. After working for 30 years on hard bakery/kitchen floors, I wanted something with a little 'give' to it. It does just that. here's the link to the product.

Thanks!   The 20 qt. Hobart is the standard in the industry. Having been a baker for so long, any thing smaller is just fooling around. Of course one must have a comparably sized oven to handle the output, which is why I have a full size commercial Duke convection oven on the covered deck just outside the kitchen.

I really like your espresso machine's retractable shelf. I suppose different weight capabilities are available?

What brand espresso machine is that?

Can you talk about your stove/oven model? How wide is it? I'm not familiar with it.

I vote to have our next audio G2G at your house. No. Don't thank me.  :thumb:

I like the hanging tool rack. I've tried several times over the years to talk my wife into letting install one but it isn't going to happen! It's a great space and time saver.

The only option available for the Rev-A-Self

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Rev-A-Shelf-5-in-W-x-5-in-1-Tier-Pull-Out-Metal-Lift-Shelf/3107255?cm_mmc=SM_FB%20-_-Kitchens-_-SosKitchenLaundryOrganization-_-3107255:Rev-A-Shelf&CAWELAID=&kpid=3107255&CAGPSPN={ifpla:pla}{ifdyn:dyn}&CAWELAID=320011480006208081

is a damper that softens the action when lowering and retracting the shelf. It was more expensive than the shelf itself so I opted to wait to get it.

The espresso machine is a Nuova Simonelli Oscar . It came with the house.

The stove is a Wolf Challenger. It's 22" wide. It's the first thing  my brother bought when he purchase the house in'78. He was a chef.

I'd love to host a G2G! We'll have to wait till summer though. The house is so small it just won't hold a lot of people. The backyard is large and perfect for the barbecue. And, by audiophile standards, my system is modest.

I'm particularly proud of the tool rack. All the ready made ones were just too large for the space. I designed it myself. Even my contractor was impressed. If you look carefully, you can see a rolling cart that was a deal of the day at Home Depot. By happenstance, and Home Depots' mistake, I got 2 of them and, with some modification and additional parts, it came to fruition.

Nice prep kitchen.  Where's the pantry, dishwasher, and clean up areas in an 800 sf house?  Looks like a commercial refrigerator/freezer in the window beyond.  Your house must be a kitchen with studio apartment on the side.

Like the compact layout, the stand mixer, hand wash sink, recessed handles, and the stainless steel single basin sink with spring hose/faucet.  Hope that spring loaded coffee shelf holds up.  Also like that you avoided corner cabinets, wife wanted a U-shaped kitchen.  We have a 2ft x 4ft full height pantry cabinet and our designer suggested putting the cookie sheets in the top section, stacked vertically - works great.  We share several kitchen features.

Pantry in various cabinets. The dishwasher is me. Next to the commercial freezer is the Duke convection oven on the covered deck. The rest of the house consists of a bathroom, bedroom, and living/listening room. It's very cozy!

Edit: I wanted recessed pulls for a cleaner look and nothing to stick out and catch. There are a lot less of them than the alternative. I finally found what I was looking for from Amazon.

All the cabinet and drawer hardware is Blum soft close.

Another Edit: That's not a hand wash sink. It's a filtered water sink for use as drinking, cooking, and baking water. Even though the local water supply is excellent, I have a friend who works for the Health Dept. who told me that sometimes birds fly into the building that houses the water filtration equipment.  :slap:

JLM, I doubt that the mixer lift shelf will give trouble. Rev-A-Shelf has been building these at least since I started in the  cabinet business in 1974. The only change, as far as I know, is the damping option to take the SNAP out of the mechanism. FWIW, I've never seen a broken one.

Konut, I applaud you for fitting the space to you rather than the norm, which is adapting to existing space.

Your welcome! I went with the 1/8 " cork underlayment from Home Depot. 1/4 " is also available.
