12v SLA Bugle WOW!
« on: 27 Feb 2007, 01:57 am »
I was listening to the Bugle the 9v's decided to konk out so lets whip up sumthin'.
I have a few 6v sla's (I use them for flashes) and a car battery booster and a need to listen to music.
Well after I cobbled them together, plugged it in and turned it on…Wow!
the standard Bugle with 9v sound similar to my Soundvalves vtp-101 phono stage but with the 12v sla's…
Where did that soundstage come from ?? Dynamics, and resolution. Ok it's missing a bit of the tube sound (not much), but I haven't started to try any other opamps yet!!.
So my question to y'all is is it worth it to change out all the caps and if so which brand?
I'm ordering a few 2227's and 2604's anything else I should try before I order the Cornet2???? aa

Thanks

The Bugle is a good phono stage. Your SLA approach is intriguing, the wheels are turning  :wink: Think I'll give it a try!

you could goto opa627 or AD857 or Burson discrete opamp. My Burson is in the mail.
Supposedly the Burson has the most detail and presence over the top opamps. I will see.

I like the 227 a bit more than the 2604 but the change between the two in this application is not vast. I am hoping that the Burson opamp is. The 227 has verve than the 2604. Detail might be the same between the two.

The Burson is about $100.

For half the price you might try a setup from Reference Audio Mods: http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=RAM&Category_Code=OPAMPS

LM4562....but I highly recommend the Cornet2  :)

 FWIW, why not build the Bugle Power Supply then put the two (Bugle and PSU) in a good size case.  In that sense, its a complete, portable phono stage with a dedicated PSU unit.  Then wait for the Piccolo head amp and have it build with its own case.  With these combo, you can have virtually any cartridge you want to throw at it for evaluation.  Hmmmmm....that makes sense!  Let me check that Ebay listing for the Bugle kit..........

What and hide all of those lovely wires???? :P
Actually I'm going low budget on this I've got the batteries already.
The LM4562 is it a drop-in replacement or does it need a browndog adapter?
Also should I replace all of the op-amps or just #3?
thanks.

Yes, I was told!  Here are the specs of the two and the LM 4562 comes in DIP (or TO if you prefer) package as well.  Note the "red underlined" entries.  I use them in exchange for the OPA 2134 in my Linkwitz Orion ASP.

Power Supply Voltage Range ±2.5V to ±17V
THD+N (AV = 1, VOUT = 3VRMS, fIN = 1kHz)
RL = 2k 0.00003% (typ)
RL = 600 0.00003% (typ)
Input Noise Density 2.7nV/SqrtHz# (typ)
Slew Rate ±20V/µs (typ)
Gain Bandwidth Product 55MHz  (typ))
Open Loop Gain (RL = 600) 140dB (typ)
