GR Research Home Theater Setup
« on: 22 Jul 2022, 10:41 pm »
I am wanting to get some speakers for music and home theater.  I would like to know what are some of the GR Research speaker setups for listening to music and home watching movies.

If you can't have the speakers 3+ feet away from the wall, the X-MTM and X-CS will be the next best options.

Hobbs will the new 8 inch woofer Danny talks about in the videos be open Baffle?

The only open-baffle plans we have right now is for three 8" servo subs below the standard NX-MTM. We were going to use 8" NQ woofers as well, but they just didn't look right together.

Our current plans for the 8" NQ is in a sealed cabinet, much like the NX-Studio, but as a floor-standing tower, and a much deeper waveguide.

Is that 3 feet from the top of the speaker to the wall or the bottom?

This sounds like a good time to reserect the "fun with speaker design" thread.?

You guys ever think about doing any more full line arrays with the NQ and neo 3? If you ran the NQs sealed it would essentially be a NX studio line array. Just throwing it out there...lol

I've wondered if a NX-Studio floorstanding speaker would be a possibility where the NQ is still sealed but the box below is a sand filled cabinet of a certain height (around 24") plus spike/isolator mounts on bottom. It wouldn't necessarily make the main speaker any different, but it would eliminate needing to use stands and woukd add some stability. It could also be used to house monster behemoth crossovers like Hobbs'

I think an OB line array with the NQ drivers would be super cool.  Similar to the Mockingbird Audio pair I heard in Danny’s RMAF setup a while back.

Keep the middle NQ drivers in the array OB, seal the top and bottom drivers so you still get pretry low...this way you still get the OB sound.

If it were me, I'd do a pair of these for the front 2 speakers:

And this for the center channel:

These for surrounds:

This for the sub:

This is exactly my setup with exception of the subs.   A pair of the Double Trouble subs at the front and a sealed sub at the back sounds absolutely amazing.    :thumb:

It could be possible, but we would likely need to have the woofers made with truncated frames, and an adjusted impedance so they can fit closer together much like the older LS6 & LS9 woofers did.
Would definitely be interesting tho.

We do have an NX studio cabinet from Peter that could use two standard M165/16 woofers below the standard woofer enclosure, but that idea never went anywhere.

We do have plans for an NX Studio center/tower that will use two of the 16-ohm NQ woofers. As well as a model with a deeper 2.5" waveguide and a new 8" NQ woofers.
But since we're still shipping out a ton of backorders, we're putting those projects on hold for a little bit until we get caught up.

Are the X-Statiks 3 ft out from wall? Just curious.

Thanks for those updates, Hobbs. Wow!
