12+ In Extenstion cord configuration?
« on: 10 Jan 2022, 08:59 pm »
Pete,

Is it possible to have a 12+ power cord but built in an extension cord fashion?

I poked around on the Furutech sight and didn't see suitable female ends.

Hi Ron,
I don't fully understand your question...

Extension Cord Fashion with molded plugs (yuck, BTW!)?

I can make a long "Twelve Plus" with a male NEMA 5-15 mains with a female NEMA 5-15R... I would use high quality connectors, not molded ones!

Cheers,
Pete

Not molded connectors no.. yuck!

extension cord fashion meaning you could take the male end of the cable and plug it into the female end of the cable. Currently the female ends of my existing TWL power cords have an IEC connector that seats into the back of an amp, etc.

I have a short-ish power cord for my turntable that's a small wall wart (similar to this)

and I'm thinking the easiest way to extend this to my UberBUSS once it's wall mounted is to get a 12+ made as an extension cord.

UberBUSS --> TT pwr cord

becomes

UberBUSS --> 12+ Ext --> TT pwr cord

Do you want one of these?

https://www.amazon.com/FIRMERST-1875W-Profile-Extension-14AWG/dp/B071XYQ77V

or

https://www.amazon.com/short-power-extension-2-Prong-female/dp/B01GFR4X3G

Or do you want the extension cord to be on the low voltage side?

https://www.amazon.com/Barrel-2-1mm-5-5mm-Extension-Cable/dp/B005CHHWR0

For the latter search barrel extension cord. Good luck finding a 1 foot one though. The shortest I could find is 3 feet.

Thanks but no. I want one of Pete's power cables that will perform the same function but in a very high quality manner.

My inquiry is regarding a TWL Twelve Plus power cable. So High.

Oh! oh oh oh oh!  :o

I'm an idiot...  sorry my abbreviation has caused confusion.  :?

I'm not looking for a "12 inch or longer cable" (12+ in ext cord)

I'm looking for a Twelve Plus power cable in a configuration where it can be an extension cord because the female end isn't an IEC connector. It's a connector that basically mimics an AC outlet. Meaning I could plug another TWL power cord into the female of this cable if I wanted to.

(welcome to my brain.. I've had to live with it everyday for decades  )

I think Pete answered yes in secret code.

NEMA-15 = Male = Left side of your first picture
NEMA-15R = Receptacle = right side of your first picture.

It's going to be funky looking if it's only 1 foot long but it should work great.

Yes, that is correct! Without any code breakers needed, YES, I can fabricate a "Twelve Plus" extension cord using high quality connectors with a male NEMA 5-15 mains (IeGO made with Japanese Furukawa copper) with a female NEMA 5-15R (most likely a Made in USA Hubbell brand)...

Ron - let me know if your needs!

Cheers,
Pete

Thanks, both of you.

Pete, I'll PM with an order later in the month after I get the turntable moved around and wall-mounted.

Could you replace the wall wart with a better quality LPS and umbilical, then use a normal Twelve Plus?

I don't understand what a boutique power cord extension is going to do for a wall wort other than empty your wallet.  Seems very wasteful to me. You can easily buy an extension for the wall wart for the DC side or AC side and get identical performance.

Same thought I had, and is why I asked about upgrading the whole path.

I'd get a linear power supply to replace the wall wart.

Thanks Tyson

It's a 24V actually for the ClearAudio table. My dealer said to keep an eye on polarity if I get a 3rd party (linear) power supply.

Also, the same problem may still exist after replacing the wall wart... Namely when the table is wall mounted, the cord may not reach all the way down to the UberBUSS.

Maybe raise the UberBUSS?     :dunno:

That's what I've done with my Shunyata Hydra.  It makes dealing with power cords in tight spaces behind my rack much easier.  I just reach over the top shelf rather than doing the crawl.  :thumb:

I've found that ANY SMPS power supply plugged in to my audio system introduces grit into the signal.  So I've been on a tear to ruthlessly replace all of them with LPS in my system.

Trying out several variations, I've learned that LPS with an R-core transformer almost always sound better than a toroidal transformer.  Here's one that will do 24v and up to 1.25A:

And here's one that will do 24v up to 3.2A:

Dude, thank you!

That's probably a better solution.

Sure thing!  Haha, it took me like 2 years of futzing around and experimenting for me to finally track down one of the last sources of grit in my system.  Every time I removed an SMPS from my audio room, things got better.  And honestly I only stumbled across the fact that the R-core's sound best by accident.  Don't get me wrong, even a toroidal LPS sounds WAY better than an SMPS, but the R-Core stuff is next level.
