The kids ARE allright!

My 7th grade daughter goes to an art school in our neighborhood
that is a magnet school and offers a curriculum of acedemics, art
and music.  I wish I could have gone to that school back in the day!

She invited me to their "Visual Arts Showcase" this evening and it
was very enlightening.  Most of the kids were all using music from
The Doors, Led Zeppelin and even Iron Butterfly for their soundtracks.

Much more than they were the popular music of last Tuesday, which
I found really interesting.

The funniest part of the evening (at least for me) was a documentary
called "The Mix Tape" about a tenth grade boy who tries to win the
heart of a girl by making her a cool mix tape of a lot of cool vintage
tunes.

The cool kids make fun of him for liking the Beatles and he boldly
says: Oh yeah, well James Blunt sucks!

I probably found this funnier than anyone else there, but it was great
to see just how important music was to these kids and how individual
their tastes were.

If we can just get them to plug into something a little bit better,
our industry will survive, because I think to a lot of them, music
is just as important as it was to us...

I was at a record swap yesterday and intently leafing through the LP bins next to me was a kid about 10 years old with his two year old sister in a carrier on his back. :D And yes James Blunt does suck.
